Would it be correct to force Trait rolls for commanders attempting certain maneuvers contrary to their trait scores or can traits in battle be suppressed in the same way as Passions? For example, if a commander with a high Reckless is presented with a Charge opportunity would he be required to roll against it if he did *not* want to charge? ok, bad example, as Charge is the best maneuver bar none, so instead how about Withdraw or Run Away? Would a high Reckless commander have to overcome this in order to perform the maneuver? On the flip side, would a high Prudent commander feel compelled to?

I think that prudent and reckless and possibly should matter in battle, at least for unit commanders have 16 or more in them. That's my message to my players at least: 5-15 = you are in controll, higher or lower = you have to roll. It is not obvious who to apply this, though ...

Reckless for Charge would be hard, but not to require a reckless roll for Push Deeper, Attack vs Two or Move on Flank. And I think a commander with 16+ in Reckless should be required to fail his Reckless to be allowed to Withdraw. A Prudent commander, on the other hand, with several wounded knight in his unit, might have to fail Prudent to not Withdraw and the stay out of the fight until First Aid has been administered.

Very true. That was a bad example. Knights charge, that's what they do.

I see adding traits as just another layer to the system. As I'm now fairly confident with the BoB rules I thought I might give it a try.

And you can mess around a lot with this. Lets say the commander can chose between three units, one of whom gave his unit a loss previously in this battle and has Vengeful (or Proud?) of 16+. Player: "I made my Vengeful". Gleeful GM: "Okay, ignoring those Saxon peasants with white flags and hands in the air, Sir Deathwish charges those seven foot tall armored warriors with great spears, intent to avenge the wounds they gave him an hour ago". The optional passion rules are nice, I you haven't used them, though they can lead to mayhem.
