On page 38 of the Book of the Manor, there's a heading, "Annual Rolls" under the Landed Knights section of the Narrative Economic System. It also shows up on page 44 under the Harvest section of the Complete Landholding System. It's mentioned again under the Experience Rolls section in Appendix C on page 48.

How are these rolls intended to work? All landholders get free experience checks each year toward Stewardship, Folk Lore and Just/Arbitrary? Are these meant to be optional checks?

We have been playing that each Knight makes experience rolls for each of these every year. However, I have a player who chose to take Just as his character's famous trait. Because of the Arbitrary experience check, his Just has declined or yo-yo'd every year. Have I interpreted the rule incorrectly?

As I understand it, you get your choice of which trait to roll against. You don't roll against both. Also, I do not believe these are checks. You roll them, and get a check if successful. Could be wrong though. Alas, KAP5.x and its supplements are in desperate need of editing to clarify such situations.

I was under the impression they were experience rolls. That's the implication by the section they're listed in.

Just exactly as it says.
"If the landholding vassal knight was not absent from his lands all year, he may make an attempt to roll on Stewardship, Folk Lore, and Just/Arbitrary."
Please help me improve this text and indicate whe4re the ambiguity arises.

So he may make the rolls, but doesn't have to?

I think the major confusion seems to be whether these are normal rolls or experience rolls?

If they are normal rolls and he succeeds at his Just, then he doesn't have to roll Arbitrary. Which means he won't have to roll to advance Arbitrary in the Experience Rolls portion of the Winter Phase.

These are answered in the core rules.

Thanks Greg. It took me a bit of hunting in the core book, but I found it (for anyone at home who's wondering, it's in the Your Own Land solo on page 200 of KAP 5.1).

Based on that it suddenly becomes clear. I can also identify where the confusion crept in. In the current version of the Book of the Manor, in Appendix C, it is listed under Step 2: Experience Rolls when it should be listed under Step 1: Perform Solo Scenario . Also, a note that it is from the Your Own Land solo would help make it clearer.

Are these rolls to increase the listed skills and trait, as one would if one had a check in them, or are they rolls to see if you earn a check? Book Of The Manor awards checks for some things, and rolls for others. The use is unclear.

"...he may make an attempt to roll on Stewardship, Folk Lore, and Just/Arbitrary."

Continues to be clear as mud, thanks. Guess I'll just house-rule it.
