View Full Version : Confused about the GPC Winter Phase Addendum

The Great Pendragon Campaign offers the following addendum to the Winter Phase:

4A. Determine Starting Bad Weather
4B. Stewardship
4C Harvest Resolution
4D Harvest Modifiers

The Book of the Manor describes the following process

4A. Revenue
4B. Fortune
4C. Harvest
4D. Tally

Obviously these two aren't in alignment, and I'm trying to align them. Should I be? Are they compatible? In BotM, weather generation is step 4.B.3 and Stewardship lives between Fortune and Tally. So—should I be doing this:

4A. Revenue (1 – 3)
4B. Fortune (1 - 10 where 4.B.3 uses Weather mods per GPC 4A
4C. Stewardship (4B in GPC)
4D.1 Harvest Resolution (Using the Harvest Resolution Tabile in GPC not the one in BotM)
4D2 Harvest Modifiers
4E Tally (per BotM)

Also, should the "Your Own Land" solo scenario be run if one is using the "Complete Landholding System?" There is some overlap. Is this meant to be used when the player doesn't want to mess with either the Narrative Economic or the Complete Landholding systems? Or is it intended only for characters who are making up for game sessions they missed.

Finally, how do I determine my starting Hate value? BotM says use 1/4 of the Hate previously held for the father. However the chargen process does not address Hate, that I can see. Should I start with 0 then? I thought I was inheriting the land and title from my father?

Thanks!

I'm using the full manor system from BoTM. On the question of Hate Landlord, for a first character I'd start this off at zero, unless you feel individual player histories should dictate otherwise.

The book of the manor, and the great pendragon campaign systems are alternatives. Use one or the other. If you have access to BotM, use that one unless you prefer the other - it's the more recent, more complete version.

The Your Own Land system was designed to quickly deal with landholding. When using a more detailed system, skip it.
You could use both, but not with the same characters - say, you have some players who don't want to deal with a detailed landholding system use Your Own Land, while others use BotM.

For the first character, you start at zero. If he has inherited the land, his father managed to keep hate at bay. During the campign, your landholding characters will pass their estates to children: in this case, any hate drops to 1/4.

Ah, and here I thought GPC was perhaps a refinement or additional rules to BotM. Thanks for clearing that up.

So, in the Winter Phase, when a player is using the Complete Landholding System, he should NOT be allowed to choose "Your Own Land", when choosing or rolling for a solo scenario, I reckon...

Okay, cool. I thought that might be the case but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Thanks!

A follow-up question. Does the character get to make an Experience roll for Just/Arbitrary if he's going to perform a Justice Event? Seems like the outcome of the latter would take precedence over the former—unless they have a cumulative effect...

The rules say he does
I'm unhappy with the long-term results of this though, especially in the way it affects manorial income. It is too powerful.

I've modded the Justice Event a little so as to lessen the effect it has on HL year on year. Instead of making it an automatic occurrence I have each PC roll vs Just to see if it takes place or not. The logic being that the steward or baliff is more likely to pass the problem higher up if the lord is known for his sound judgement.

For most PKs this means they wont get a Justice Event every single year.

Thanks, everybody!

One more: On pg. 43, Book of the Manor, the fourth sentence under "3. Treasury" end with "...add it to _". Can someone fill in the blank, please?
