The Book of Battle seems to contradict itself on pg. 47. First under the Critical and Success Result, it says to "roll damage and apply the results, as per normal combat." Then, in the notes further down it says "It is not necessary for the Gamemaster to keep track of wounds and damage done to the enemy."

I think this means that you should track wounds and damage done to the PKs, as per normal combat, but also to learn if a lance is broken, the horse or the rider is struck by an arrow, or a PK or a enemy is unhorsed because he receives a Major Wound, etc. Correct?

Thanks!

Firstly, you mistyped a bit in the second quote:

"It is tonot necessary for the Gamemaster to keep track of wounds and damage done to the enemy."

Secondly, this bit about not tracking wounds only applies to the PK's opponents, wounds done to PKs are certainly tracked. However you still need to get the PKs to roll their damage because:

an odd/even result is important during a lance charge (controls whether the lance breaks)
if they do a lot of damage (> the opponent's MW) then there may be the opportunity to take a prisoner (see the third bullet under the Melee Results table)

So the take on the rules as described in the second para of your OP is correct.
