So we tried a third time to have an error-free battle and everything was going swimmingly until Round 4. Here both sides Fumbled their Unit Intensity rolls. Reading on pg 39, under Surprise, I stumbled a bit on the "Fight Against" instructions: Gamemaster rolls once on the Opportunity table..." I did that and got a 4 (Attack against one random Disordered Unit). I then determined the enemy and rolled the Snarling Spearmen. Then, back on the Surprise page, I read, "To determine the enemy and the unit results, use the Maneuver and Results table..."
Huh? I thought I'd just determined the enemy, and I didn't see a "Maneuver and Results" table so I assumed this was referring to Table 14: Surprise. Rolling there, I got a 17: "Unit commander ties. Normal choice of maneuvers, and the enemy is weak. There is only one foe per two player knights..."
Since I only have one PK with two Battle Buddies, I ruled that Elad could choose any Tie maneuver against 1 Snarling Spearman (who was at -10 for being disordered). He chose Attack and Bran fought one Snarling Spearman solo, while the Battle Buddies did nothing. Brand won and so we counted it as a Unit Win.
Did I do that right? This was a real curve ball. I was confused about why I was rolling on the Opportunity table, then about how the enemy is determined, then about the "one foe per player knight" thing.
At any rate, this time, skipping the badass Saxons and the enemy Passion rolls, Bran's unit fared much better. They had the Saxons withdrawing in round 3 (and might've Followed except for the Surprise goof) and again in round 4, but they elected not to Follow at this point. If they had, Round 5 may or may not have opened with a BI of 0. Since the Mearcred Creek is scripted at 5 turns, and since it was thus impossible to achieve two consecutive rounds with opening BI of 0 or less, I guess it's just as well that my PK did NOT Follow, resulting in the Indecisive victory, per the script as well, right?
Thanks,
T.
