PENDRAGON 5.1, pg, 37, gives a starting squire's skills as First Aid 6, Battle 1, Horsemanship 6, and one other skill at 5.

The BOOK OF THE MANOR, pg 10, says "skills start at 10 for Horsemanship, First Aid, and Sword, plus one other of the character's choice.

Furthermore, I was under the impression that squires just got check on their rolls, like PKs, and rolled for advancement in the Winter Phase. But BoM, says any three of the squire's skills may increase 1 pt per year from age 15-20. At age 21, if he remains in the knight's service, he starts rolling 1d6 and the skill advances on a 1.

Since both of these are late editions, I'm not sure which has precedence. It's a big difference. Please advise.

Thanks,

T.

Consider them to be alternatives.

The GPC has one more option you missed, Taliesin: During step 7 of the winterphase (training and practice) squires, wifes and other NPCs get to increase their skills by 1D3 points. That’s my favourite option.

Thanks, Zarkov. Yep, I actually did see that after I posted this. Sigh. I spend a lot of time chasing my own tail between these various books. I'm making my own electronic set of rules that consolidates and clarifies...

On further reflection, it seems like the thing to do is advance squires by 1 point every year in First Aid, Horsemanship and their "Other Skill" and to start Battle at 0 and advance it 2 every year. At this rate, the squire would end up with 10 in those scores, which is on parity with a starting PC.
