I downloaded the .pdf of the Book of Battles ("BoB") last night and spend much time reading and re-reading it (since I can't seem to wrap my brain around the Battles section of the KAP 5.1).

I am having a difficulty with the example on page 73 - since it seems to be running contrary to my understanding of what I have read previously.

Under Step 3: Maneuver it states:
"Lord Wolf attempts his Battle Skill and makes his roll but loses to Unit Intensity(29), which gets a Critical Succes."

huh?

I understand the Unit commander rolls against his battle skill but I am not gettng the "loses to Unit Intensity (2)" part or how it gets a Critical Success.

Any help here?

Thanks
Todd

It's quite logical, but a bit poorly worded.

Lord Wolf rolls his battle skill. It's a success.

Battle intensity rolls. It has a "skill" of 29, so it adds +9 to the d20 roll. In other words, it has a 45% chance of rolling a critical. According to the rules, a critical is interpreted as a roll of 20 in an opposed resolution in like this. Thus, it wins. (Look through the rules for opposed resolution and skills above 20 in the rule book!).

Thus Battle intensity wins, but Lord Wolf has a partial success. So he can use the menu for "partial success" when he chooses his action for that battle round.

Okay I see - I was not considering the Double D20 aspect since the BoB does not mention using that - but I did not consider the fact its a standard rule now.

Now if the UNIT Commnader is an NPC - the GM just deciedes everything - right?

Well thats what I would do :D! Though he could of course ask the PKs for advice: "Sir Bungle-a-lot, should we charge into the press or try to withdraw and reorganize?"

Thanks again - I am determined to get this!

Is the following an example inconsitency or am I missing something:

On page 47 under Body Guard Bonus Phase it states:

"The commander has been saved, but followers suffer significant and horrible loss; half of his knights or footman followers in the unit."
In the example Lord Wolf has 7 follower knight - yet it states that "none of his followers are lost this round"

What am I missing here?

Figured it out - it was just a typo.

Be sure to check this post, because the example you're referring to has several errors in it.
