So I think I get most of the Book of Battles ("BoB") and I have to say I actually follow it more than the appendix rules in KAP 5.1 for Battles.

Just a clarification point - using the GPC in year 485 I have the players attatched to a unit at the Battle of Mearcred Creek.
The Unit Commander is well the Unit Commander
The KPs are the players
and there are 7 "Followers"

I as the GM would use the Unit Commander (Sir Amig's) Battle Skill during The Maneuver phase and others. I am assuming that I don't roll combat with enemy troops for him (the rules don't seem to indicate this) but rather have the KPs fight in the Charge and Melee phases and it is THIER success that determines the Combat Results and Unit Results.

As the GM I roll for the Followers and see how they do but do I just ignore what The Unit Commander does - just assume he is off doing his thing?

Thanks
Todd

I prefer BoB because it turns one of the knight's major activtiies into a little scenario

If he was a player character leader, he would have to fight--he's right there with the unit.
They train with and around him--that's why they are a unit.
As a gamemaster character, this is a decision for you
if he fights, you have to be ready to lose the whole unit if he goes down
if he fights, you will the totally ikky position of gamemaster versus gamemaster
or you, as gamemaster, just state what occurs to him without rolling. It is what GMs do
and when he goes down, he goes down for a reason, not a die roll
it's bad enough that the players are slaves to the dice, no need to make the GM one too in a new situation!
after people are experienced and know the BoB flow it goes quickly, and I'm happy as GM to let the player knights cope with a dead commander :D
But not a new player, and not a new GM!!
