The GPC has Clarence as a Duchy that includes both the County of Clarence and Marlborough.

However the homelands and leaders page (http://www.weareallus.com/pendragon/leaders.html) makes no mention of that.

I've had a hunt through the GPC and I can't see any long term implications on the campaign either way but I'm wondering if there's a "definitive" answer.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

I am 90% sure that Marlbourough is in clarence. In fact if u go to gregs player characters on his pendragon page and read about sir Clyydno( right above the knight of the Medlar) I believe that Clyddno was from Marlbourough. Good Luck.

If you look through, you will find that there are a couple of instances of this. There may or may not be separate entities. Cornwall, for instance, is the independent kingdom of King Idres, but the county is Logres and is comprised of the counties of Jagent, Tintagel, and Devon.

My assumption is it deals with the title of the ruler. A single county would be an Earl while a duchy is comprised of one or more counties and is ruled by a duke. Without knowing more, that is how I would handle it.

Yes, there is. Absolutely. Sort of.
Here's my latest explanation of this. :-\

It ties in with the vaguely described feud between Clarence and Gloucester. That is a saga that I am slowly unraveling myself.

The Clarence/Gloucester/Marlborough/Galvoie territory (and maybe Wuerensis, maybe more) used to be the Gewessi, a confederation of former Dobunni, Atrebates and Belgae peoples. That confederation disappeared along with their leader Vortigern. Apparently, Ambrosius appointed a dux over the region afterwards (but maybe only over the northern part). The other dukes that he created (Cornwall, Silchester, Lindsey and Caercolun) were all to protect borderlands, so maybe this was too, or perhaps the people were particularly rebellious. Heck, judging from their actions afterward, maybe he set the duke to keep them from each other's throats.

So amidst the confusion of Anarchy, the leaders of Gloucester and Clarence both claimed the title of Duke, even though neither of them ruled over more than their own county. Along the way Galvoie was enchanted, and Wuerensis and Marlborough each achieved separate independence.

At least as far as I can tell so far.
