.... or next?

Since the recruiting is ostensibly done in the Winter Phase, it doesn't seem right to me to realize either the expense for the wages or the income for the service until the next year, yeah? I'm thinking here of stewards, foresters, etc.

Thanks,

Gneerally speaking, you pay for things this year, and get the benefits the next.

In the winter phase, when making payments, you are setting aside the money you need and will use next year.

Ah, okay. Thanks, Darren!

Sorry for so many questions, guys. There's over 2 (3?) decades of development behind this game and I'm crash-coursing it, trying to learn it all in just a few months! It's huge! I don't have a group of players to support my learning of the rules, so the duty pretty much falls on me alone. Thank goodness for this forum! Hopefully, all my questions will help build the knowledge base for newbies to come!

Sorry to raise this again, but another question has come up: Do you also pay the annual maintenance in advance? In the case of the apiary, the 1£ Maintenance fee includes the beekeeper's wages. So, we established above that the steward's and other retinue members' wages are paid in advance. Do you pay the maintenance fee in advance as well?

Thanks!

Well I don't have the BotM here before me at the moment, but what I can remember from skimming the harvest, you put all the money you are about to spend the next year 'up front'. This includes the wages for stewards, household knights and other retinue, the building and/or the maintenance of investments and also your PKs cost of living.

Granted, we have been doing it differently, simply counting the cost of all the different maintenances at the end of the year due to a historical leftover (= that's the way we originally did it when we started with 4th ed). The BotM makes more sense, but it is difficult to make the switch in mid-campaign, as the money has already been spent for last year which should be spent on the next year as well...

Yes, this is right.
I sometimes got confused and did it the wrong way, but for things like wages (as opposed to buildings), it rarely makes a difference in practice. Since you paid them last year and you will pay them next year, so the value doesn't change most years.
