I have just returned from a trip to Old Sarum and Salisbury with my KAP playing friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience; far more than I thought I would from the few photos I had seen beforehand (of Sarum that is). To any of my fellow Brits who have not yet been I definitely recommend you find time to visit.

To all those KAP players elsewhere in the world, in the absence of being there in person, perhaps you may find these pictures of interest. I have uploaded them in a high enough resolution for most of the information boards to be clearly read. The order is roughly - On the way to Sarum from Salisbury, entrance to Sarum, the courtyard, chapel, rear battlements, ramparts looking toward Salisbury, outer bailey, Sarum cathedral ruins, Salisbury cathedral, cloister & cathedral interior.

And not forgetting the incredible Haunch of Venison - a pub with an equally rich history; a fine semi hidden snug, a coin bank for those short of a few quid to get the round in, and a boxed, mummified hand!

Fantastic - thanks for sharing. I've not managed to get there yet myself - been not so far away with the family on a couple of occasions, but they've not quite grasped how wonderful an afternoon looking at obscure village names (just because they're manors in Dad's game) and mounds of earth (look, that's Sarum, you know from Dad's geeky game...)

One day!

My wife (the solo PK in my game) and I got snowed in at Salisbury last Christmas. The wintry weather ruined our great tour of Welsh castles, but if you ever have to be stranded in the snow, I highly recommend Salisbury. We were staying inside the Close at Sarum College. It was spectacular. Ah—my wife just reminded me we ate at that same restaurant! It was snowing. Very Dickensian! The very first knight that was buried in Salisbury Cathedral was one of my wife's ancestors. She sat next to his tomb/effigy when we went to the choral service. It was a great experience we'll never forget.

Never been, but would love too. Wouldn't it be great, if we could have our own mini convention in Salisbury?

Now that I'd love to do!

Sounds like a challenge for the Pendragon Eschille ;)

Worth pondering perhaps - who'd be interested (hypothetically speaking of course...)

I'd go. And I know my group would go too. So that's 5 for starters.

I would be there seeing as I leave very near as well. In Southampton now but that's still damn close to Sarum.

Thanks for sharing this! I am a "little"far away (I live in Brazil), and I still haven't had the opportunity to visit England (though one of my players did), so it is nice to see those pictures -- specially the one with the model.

Great stuff!

Those photos brought back a bunch of memories. I got over to England for two weeks in the mid 90s. And we did stop at Old Sarum on the way back from visiting Avebury by bus. Had it drop us off there and we walked around. It looks like the place has gotten much better signage and some facilities since then.

And I did use a photo of the Old Sarum model in an early running of a KAP campaign. Part of my photo taking on that trip was specifically getting photos of old objects like storage chests, coats-of-arms, etc. to use for props.

I live in East London. We're going on holiday in the West Country this summer and I'd like us to stop by Sarum on the way there, or back, but don't know if we'll have the time.

This site has a good artist's impression:

I did a one-page flyer to introduce my KAP game at the local club and used the image above, as well as a few character portraits -ahem- borrowed from the game and Gamemaster Characters. I think it gave a great sense of place. Sarum's hill fort origins really give it a dramatic and unusual look.
