Hi people I’m trying to make sense of the political situation in Cambria during the Reign of Uther and the Anarchy, as presented in GPC and Savage Mountains. I have already figured out that an Escavalon campaign starting in 495 could be very cool. Lots of action, lots of glory, lots of conquest, and an opportunity for a glorious death in 508 :) But trying to piece together the information in the books is a bit complicated. Can anyone tell me if this is about right:

(Possible spoilers)

Norgales/Gomeret:
King Pellinore of The Isles is the King of Gomeret, and early in the campaign (until 493 or so when he abandons his Kingdom to hunt the questing beast) the King of greater Norgales (The united realms of Gomeret, Norgales and Cheshire). Is Cameliard part of greater Norgales at this point?

In 497 the three brothers Cadwy try to take over greater Norgales, but only manages to hold on to the Kingdom of Gomeret and lesser Norgales. Splitting greater Norgales into Kingdom of Gomeret (including lesser Norgales) and the Duchy of Cheshire? I guess the questing King Pellinore doesn’t give a damn, but what happens to his family when this happens (the de Galis clan)?

Estregales/Sugales/Escavalon
We learn in the Adventure of the Embassy to Estregales (Should this in reality have been Sugales?) in 494 that the kingdoms of Estregales and Escavalon are united under King Canan. Here we learn of how he is poisoned and his kingdom fracturing, leaving the sons Sir Lak and Sir Dirac as heirs to the throne. The year later (495) we hear that the King of Estregales invades Escavalon with hordes of Irish mercenaries. Would this unnamed king be the newly crowned Dirac trying to reunite his father’s kingdom after Nanteleod refuses to reaffirm his vows to the crown? Or is it some usurper king from Ireland that has taken advantage of the chaos in Estregales (perhaps the book assumes that Sir Orcas survive the Adventure of the Embassy to Estregales and try to hold on to the throne)? The latter might seem more plausible when Nanteleod turns the tables on Estregales in 500 and make Dirac swear allegiance to him. I would think that swearing allegiance to your late father’s vassal would be easier if he helped you kick an usurper off the throne.

In 501 Nanteleod marches north and defeats the Cadlwes in battle. They are all killed and the nobleman Maelgwen is appointed King of Norgales and vassal of Nanteleod. Is this greater Norgales, or the Norgales region shown on page 73 in GPC? In Savage Mountains he is said to be the independent King of Gomeret, not Norgales. Since we learn that the rulers of Gloucester, Orofoise, Galvoie, Cheshire, Cameliard and Wurensis all submit to Nanteleod in 502, I would assume that Maelgwen is given Gomeret and (lesser) Norgales. And later, perhaps early in Arthur’s reigh, loses Norgales to King Galihoden who swears to King Arthur? In 503 Nanteleod fights Malahaut over the fate of the Duchy of Lindsey. Nanteleod wins and accepts Lindseys vassalage. The rest of the timeline up to Nettley Marsh is quite clear cut.

Two bonus questions: 1)King Alain is never mentioned in 510. Should he be one of the Eager vassals? I would think that he would swear allegiance to King Arthur early since the King obviously feels at home at Alains court. 2) In Savage Mountains Lak is king of Estregales. When does King Dirac die? Nettley Marsh?

Thanks

Greg has a list of Lands and Leaders of Pendagon (http://www.gspendragon.com/leaders.html) on his website that may answer some of those questions. It has a quick overview of the kingdom/county, the culture/religion, key places within the kingdom/county, who ruled and when, and if they were a vassal.

Speaking of which I was noodling around on that page checking out the names of various northern rulers and I noticed that the 'North Riding [Malahaut, Cumbria]' entry is tagged up as a spurious hyperlink.

One for the webmaster's bug list I think.
