Ever need to come up with an authentic Cymric name on the spot? Well, here's a thousand of 'em, plus variants and diminutives for each (where available). This list is numbered so you can roll d1000 for random determination, includes pronunciation (although, trust me, your mileage may vary—I found FOUR different pronunciations for "Taliesin"!) and even meanings and origins for most names. If you'd like to help me round out the pronunciations please contact me via PM and I'll give you editing permissions. You will never have to scramble for a Cymric name again, my friend.

This is part of my personal (some would say Quixotic) quest to identify all of the NPC knights in Logres with a name, a manor, lord, and coat-of-arms.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Greg! Next I'm going to randomly (well, more or less randomly) assign names to all the Salisbury manors on my Heraldry page. It will be much easier than compiling this list was. I daresay this is the most comprehensive list of Welsh names you'll find on the Web. I scoured lots of different sites to compile these and damn near ran out of names.

I've added a 2nd worksheet to the Google doc that now allows you to roll by frequency. The frequencies are very loosely categorized and decidedly not scientific, but I found a great article on Welsh name frequency based on 13th century legal records. This comprises the top two tiers of names. The third was derived by extrapolating out the names that had two or more variations (I reasoned these would have been more popular). The fourth, most rare tier, provides a roll on the full 1000 names, eliminating the names from the first three tiers. So, this is as "realistic" a distribution as I can manage given the info I found on the Web. Close enough for rock 'n' roll...
