I just ordered a copy I found via the abebooks. They have a few more at rock bottom prices:

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?bt.x=0&bt.y=0&sts=t&tn=pendragon+com panion

Mine will take a few weeks to ship from the US to Blighty, at the rock bottom price of one manorial income for a year - £6. I won't be able to report on their reliability or it's condition until then.

I didn't know there was one. At £6 I'm no complaining.

What are the differences between the first and second editions? Are they substantial? If so, I might pick up a 2nd ed as well and use this one as a loaner for any of my players that are interested, or let my kids have it.

According to Phyllis Ann Karr's foreword to the second edition, she combed it for typos and errors, as well as added several pages' worth of new entries. She acquired further sources she hadn't had when she wrote the first edition, amongst other things.

IIRC, isn't the first edition also full sized, like a game book? This looks like the trade paperback version that was produced in the late 90s by Chaosium, and then Green Knight.

There are a few more versions than that...

1st - 1983 - King Arthur Companion HC - Chaosium/Reston - RPG size
2nd - 1986 - King Arthur Companion SC - Chaosium - RPG size
3rd - 1997 - Arthurian Companion SC - Chaosium - novel size
4th - 2001 - Arthurian Companion HC & SC - Green Knight - novel size

None of those sell for much.

There are only two editions, afaik, in the sense of a new version of the book with changed and sometimes new content, but they were published by different publishing houses, and in different formats. The Green Knight version – the last one in your list – is actually the 2nd, revised, edition.

You're probably right. I didn't pull the books down from my shelf to compare. I just copies notes from my spreadsheet.

It came in the post a few days ago and I've had a chance to have a good look through.

It's an original 1983 first edition, and I couldn't be happier. Very good condition, and the cover illustration is gorgeous.

You can tell it's second hand as there's a hand written note on the first page you come to, as it was given as a gift. I really don't mind that though, in fact I see it as a plus. It gives the book a bit of character.

I had a novel sized version that I much enjoyed but went missing a move or two ago. Fortunately a couple of days ago I found what was listed as a hardcover for about $7 including shipping. My guess is this would be one of the first two editions, but I'm pleased to see you find the 1st edition to be useful.

2nd edition was expanded upon and add extra appendixes and maps and she actually went on to say that all of places she learned the 1st had to change do to new evidence she discovered i think if you are a gm you should be using the 2nd one as well as a good pendragon fan it worth it in my opinion, I have both and use 2nd more then 1st these days.
