View Full Version : Treasure from the luck tables
Given that some of my players have used up the initial items they received on the luck tables (eg they drank the potion) I'm considering providing them with additional treasure from the same tables, but I'm concerned about balance issues.
How would the rest of you handle this? What is a good way to introduce the treasure without it seeming too contrived? Should second generation characters get a roll on the luck tables if their fathers used up or lost the initial item? What if the initial item is still intact?

Balance? Balance and luck are practically opposites

Just me maybe, but I would not handle it at all, except maybe to say, "Well, that's luck for you."

Contrived? Or do you mean "without seeming to play favorites"?

No

Lucky guys!

Definitely contrived. I want to be able to give players treasure when appropriate. I also want to be able to rarely give them items that are unique and that can be passed on to the next generation.
I don't want to turn Pendragon into a treasure hunt or dungeon crawl, but I also want my players to feel that they walk away from adventures with something tangible.
So, if the items from the luck table are too much, what are some good rewards?

Glory
Favors owed
And if that is not enough, some treasure that is...
better equipment
worth money
taken from the villain, which had been used against them to great cost
or heirlooms from enemies which will be sought back by kin

What form should these heirlooms and things taken from villains take?

Use the Luck Table
but the key point here is that the player knights must earn them

Hear! Hear!
I use the Luck tables to tie into a character's ancestor's heirlooms, a reward your character has gotten for something he did while growing up. They are meant to be special items. There is nothing that says you cannot get something similar during gameplay, but the idea is they are not meant to be handled out without thought. Every reward should have a back story associated with it. That bronze sword you have? That came from the roman battle of XXXXXDX where your grandfather wrestled it away from the Saxon invader. Gives a character much more background... Could it happen again? Sure, but to just hand out treasure without thought is not the normal Pendragon campaign, IMHO.
