Just about to start 510 in the GPCs.
There are 8 PKs (4 regular, 4 intermittent players) and they have guided Salisbury through the worst of the anarchy. Now Sarum did just get burned down by saxons but no-one could really hold that against them. They were in a real bind. ;D
Robert has just been knighted by the hero who slew Aelle Bretwalda.
I decided to stat up Robert. Seeing as his father died long before his formative yards I decided to let the PKs as the chief officers of Salisbury be the ones to form his personality.
Robert begins as a blank canvas - baseline numbers for culture/religion/region/class. Then each player gets to put forward one of his famous traits or passions. This represents the PKs influence on the young boy as he grew up and the important things he taught to his Lord. If the chosen trait is 16-20 Robert gets +3 to his total. If it is 21+ he gets +4.
One PK told him (fairly romanticised) tales of Uther and his noble family giving him a +4 to loyalty (pendragon). Another taught him the value of honour while another spoke to him of justice and the roman knight showed him how to temper british christianity with mercy.
It seems to be a good way to get the players invested in the young Earl and gives a payoff after the solemn oath they swore to Earl Roderick on the eve of St. Albans. It looks like the lessons will mean he begins as a chivalric knight and he will certainly be among the eager vassals in 510.
As Robert's officers I may also allow their advice to shape how he develops both with training and glory. His career will be vital for their success and for Salisbury and this keeps them involved after their relative dominance during the anarchy.
Has anyone done anything similar?
