Hi,
I am thinking aloud, but if and when you capture Octa at the Battle of Lindsey you get a ransom of ?100.
If you look through rules capturing a King is in the ?1000's.
My guess is firstly he's a Saxon, I think most Saxons would rather eat their children than hand over that sort of money.
Also I assume Uther takes him as his prisoner, so I guess it's more of a reward from Uther.
Any other thoughts?
Cheers,

A quick response - and probably faulty as I've not got books to hand just now - but I would say that the Saxons would pay up. They have a strong community loyalty, and I have a feeling that I have seen something in either GPC or KAP that says they follow the ransom system.
I would also be surprised if the player knights who captured him got the ?1000! More likely to go up the chain of command to their superiors. That said, as a GM I would forsee a handsome reward for such a success - maybe a manor etc.

Capturing a Cymric King is ?2000, but saxon ransoms are much lower.
Also, the term 'King' doesn't necessarily mean the same thing - Octa may be more like a Pennath, a 'king' in title but whose kingdom is may be little more than a barony or county in Cymric terms.
That said, I see no harm in increasing the ransom if you want to. Especially if you are using the Book of the Manor - the money will go fast enough!

The 100L is from uther as a reward to the players( to split as well!!!!) Seeems paltry, and it is a bit, but its a lower period and octa is really just a petty warlord even though he fancies himself a KING, he is a chief. Only Aelle the bretwalda is a KING type. I would place octa's ransom with that of an earl perhaps, but no more. Saxons have strong loyalty and follow the ransom system LOOSELY. They want STRONG rulers and getting captured isnt necessarily strong. That said, the internal politics of the tribe have more to do with the ransom being paid or not. Is Octa's heir strong and capable? then maybe they dont pay a ransom for Octa.. is his heir a retarded twit? Maybe they do pay the ransom. Also, does Octa have several children that would challenge one another for leadership, thus splitting the tribe apart in warfare? Maybe they wou :Dld pay the ransom just to avoid that?..... It all just depends on the GM's take on it. Thats the fun of it.

Cheers for the feedback.
I may up it a wee bit, but yeah I agree it's more of a reward from Uther, rather than them ransoming him back to the tribe.
