Hi folks,

Short time lurker, first time poster here.

I'm running the GPC, just finished AD 490. In addition to 5.1 and GPC, I'm using BotM and BoA.

I have a question about glory. In GPC for 490, under the Battle of Lindsey, it states that:

A. The battle lasts 9 rounds
B. Each round gets the participants 45 glory/round, x2 for a decisive victory, for 90/round altogether.
C. The PKs have the chance to capture Octa on round 8.

My questions are:

1. The BoA has an attacking and defending Saxon army. I've been rolling 1d20 to find who the PKs fight that round. They have a single exchange with the Saxon. Win, lose, or kill their enemy, the tide of battle sweeps them way and the next round they fight someone new. Is that correct?

2. If a PK deals enough damage to their foe to get through armor/shield and still do enough damage to incapacitate, to they get glory (per the table in BoA) for defeating that foe, in addition to the glory gained per round from the battle? Or does the glory per round of battle assume that foes are being defeated?

3. If a PK is knocked unconscious halfway through the battle, does he get glory for the entire battle, or only the rounds in which he was an active participant?

4. If the PKs engage Octa on Round 8, but the battle lasts only 9 rounds, does this imply that Octa will engage them for two rounds and then, if he survives, try to break and run? Or will he fight/run in accordance with his own traits (Valorous/Prudent/etc.)?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, and thanks to Greg for such a great game.

1. I can't find any explicit mention of which army to use in the BoA. As Octa and Eosa are invading Logres I reckon I'd use the attacking army as they have a solid force of lads with them.

2. The Glory per round listed in the GPC is for the old battle system from the basic rulebook. If running Book of Battle battles you use the base glory for the foe modified by battle size, unit results and battle outcome as per p57. Glory is gained for facing the opponent rather than defeating him. Armour and major wounds are generally useful only if going for ransoms or extended rounds as far as I know.

3. Glory is gained for facing foes. Facing mud is not worth much. ;D

4. The players may take an extended round (p. 52) to go after Octa. This confines all of this action to round 8. In round 9 the Saxons rout and the PKs may pursue (p. 32) for ransoms, loot and glory.

Morningkiller already answered this in above, but just to stick my oar in...

1. I don't have the Book of Armies nor the Book of Battles, but sounds to me you are doing it just right.

2. Like Morningkiller said, you don't have to actually roll enough to incapacitate a foeman in the battle round. It is an abstraction; if you roll a success, you are bashing some enemies and gain glory. The roll success glory modifiers were:
Crit: x2
Success: x1
Failure: x0.5
Disengaged: x0.1
We use Draw being x0.75 and Partial Success as x0.5. So lets say that one of your PKs fights 9 rounds and gets: success, success, failure, failure, disengaged, success, crit, failure, unconscious (x0, see below). Counting those modifiers together, you get 6.6. 6.6 times 90 is 594 Glory. He did rather well, despite napping the final round due to damage taken in round 8.

3. The PK is not participating in the battle in any meaningful way whilst unconscious. Hence, he only gets the glory for the rounds in which he was doing something.

4. Easiest way to think about it is NOT to confuse a Battle Round (about an hour long) with the combat round (closer to some seconds in length). Battle rounds are an abstraction. With as important a foe as Octa, we switch back to the normal combat system to do blow by blow instead of the battle rounds' abstraction. The fight is unlikely to last an hour, so once the players have either won or lost, you can zoom out again and move to Battle Round 9, with the Saxons routing.
