View Full Version : PKs moving to Sussex

Just finished Badon Hill today.
Sir Gwyn fell valiantly battling a Dragon Warrior on Day 4. Most of the rest took serious wounds and Sir Roderick was captured and then rescued dramatically by his plucky younger brother (who sort of deserted - more to come on that...).
The PKs unit of round table badasses scored 7(!) triumphs on Day 3 and their heroism broke the saxons. Overall a lower body count than expected but tense and fun.
This really marks the end of their promise to Roderick to raise Earl Robert. He has now truly grown into a leader, statesman and warrior. They have perhaps outgrown Salisbury and become heroes and leading round table knights in their own right.
I asked the lads what they fancy doing as a focus in the next phase of the campaign. I put a few options to them and the concensus was that they fancy having the legendary Sir Arcavius (50k Glory, Battle 30 and Deputy Marshal of Logres) named Earl of Sussex (Celyn didn't make it through Badon).
The other PKs will help him pacify the saxons and become his trusted officers and big landholders in the county.
Is there a detailed Pendragon map of Sussex? I've gone through most of my stuff and found one for Anglia.
Saxons! has some good stuff and the forthcoming nobles book will be vital to support the newdirection but if anyone has additional resources to point to I'd be very grateful.

Great!
There is no map for Sussex done by me. Check Saxons! for whatever is there.
Maybe you should use
Anglia instead, since there is a map! :)
Oh yea, be sure to give everyone a Saxon wife
She will help them keep their manors and lands more peaceful
That is, if they can overcome their Hate Saxons long enough to engender some kids!

Good stuff. We've found some pretty solid maps online.
Saxons! has a map of the Barony of Hastings which is part of Sussex. Along with the list of holdings and locations we will knock something together.
Sussex has some great castles and these have definitely sold the guys on going there and building them.

I considered Anglia but I like the story arc of Hervis and Galegantis. Hervis has been a friendly rival for glory up to now while Arcavius' son Gaius was the knight who brought down Galegantis at Bassus River. Two PKs have massive 20+ hate saxons so keeping Anglia as the example of 'how not to do it' seems apt.

Just remember that in this period there are only Motte and Bailey castles
building in stone starts during the continental campaign

They are starting small alright but the guys are just back from the castle of Joy so they have seen the future - shining ramparts, magic cups, brass automatons and four-armed fomorians are surely just one phase away for everyone!
I've been working on some holdings for the PKs and here is my first stab at a bigger charter -
I, King Arthur, the lord of all Britain by the Grace of God and His Virgin Mother, for the great service granted to me and my kingdom for his prowess in the great Battle of Badon and many diverse struggles of the Realm, grant to this good and valiant knight SIR UWAIN OF GRANTHAM for the duration of his life and that of all his heirs the manors called BURY, AMBERLEY and WICK to be held in the service of my Tenant in Chief Arcavius, Earl of Sussex in exchange for three knight’s service. Additionally, I name SIR UWAIN the STEWARD of ARUNDEL CASTLE and its poor manors of LITTLEHAMPTON, FORD and YAPTON to be held in my name for the duration of his life. I direct that the incomes of aforesaid manors be used to maintain the stout keep at Arundel and to provide a garrison therein of not less than two knights and ten swordsmen at all times for the defence of these lands against the threat of both rebellion and invasion.
In Game terms: 3 manors, grant (inheritable), for 3 knight service to Earl Arcavius. Annual income £18 (3x£6); ALSO town of Arundel with income of £10 plus £12 income from 3 poor manors (3x£4) as a gift (lifetime only) in exchange for maintaining, defending and garrisoning the keep with 2 knights and 10 swordsmen. Annual Glory: 40 from income, 8 from castle (motte and bailey). One Time Glory: 250 (Officer to the Pendragon).
How does that look?

Working on further charters and trying to give them all a bit of flavour rather than making everyone a Baron or Banneret. Sir Roderick is actually a Roman - son of Lupus but named for the old Earl. Arthur is going to give him Chichester and an archaic title with a few extra priveleges.
I, King Arthur Pendragon, the lord of all Britain by the Grace of God and His Virgin Mother, for the loyal service granted to me and my kingdom for his prowess in the great Battle of Badon and many diverse struggles of the Realm, grant to this true and valiant knight SIR RODERICK DE BOURNE , THE BLACK KNIGHT OF THE STREAMS for the duration of his life and that of all his heirs, the town of CHICHESTER and its castle and the nearby manors of SELSEY, BINDERTON, BATCHMERE and LAGNESS to be held in the service of my Tenant in Chief Arcavius, Earl of Sussex in exchange for five knights service. Additionally I gift SIR RODERICK the ancient title and privileges of PRAETOR of NOVIOMAGUS REGINORUM and the site of the PALACE of FISHBOURNE to do with as he will for the duration of his life.
In Game terms: Chichester and four manors, grant (inheritable), for 5 knight service to Earl Arcavius. Annual income £34 (10+(4x£6)); ALSO title grants additional income of £4 from Chichester Court fees, gift. Annual Glory: 38 from income, 8 from castle (motte and bailey). One Time Glory: 250 (Officer to the Imperator and Caesar of Britannia).

Nice
The book after BoESTATE will be WARLORDS, with more information on this stuff, but you are doing just fine.
Lucky players.

Here are the rest of the PKs charters
Sir Aeron - devout christian and faerie lore 20 - from a line of renowned monster hunters.
I, King Arthur, the lord of all Britain by the Grace of God and His Virgin Mother, for the service granted to me and my kingdom for his prowess in the great Battle of Badon and in recognition of the loyal sacrifice of his father, our Companion, SIR GWYN of NEWTON on that self-same field, grant to this good and courageous knight SIR AERON OF NEWTON for the duration of his life and that of all his heirs the town of LEWES and the manors called BARCOME, STONEHAM, GLYNDE, IFORD and PLUMPTON as well as the seat of LEWES CASTLE to be held in the service of my Tenant in Chief Arcavius, Earl of Sussex in exchange for six knight’s service. Additionally, I name SIR AERON WARDEN OF THE WEALD and THE FOREST PERDUE that he may defend the people and lands of Sussex from the knaves, ruffians and fell things that dwell within and I gift to him the right to log the royal forest no more than twice per year.
In Game terms: Town plus 5 manors, grant (inheritable), for 6 knight service to Earl Arcavius. Annual income £40 (£10 + (5x£6)); ALSO right (gift) to log twice per year on royal forests cost £2, Income £2d3+6. Annual Glory: 40 from income, 8 from castle (motte and bailey). One Time Glory: 250 (Officer to the Pendragon).
Sir Blaen, most badass of round table knights
I, King Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon, the lord of all Britain by the Grace of God and His Virgin Mother, for the great service granted to me and my kingdom for his insuperable prowess in the great Battle of Badon, grant to this noble and valiant knight SIR BLAEN THE GIANTKILLER OF STAPLEFORD for the duration of his life and that of all his heirs the BARONY OF HASTINGS including the CASTLE and TOWN OF HASTINGS and the manors of ST. HELEN'S, HOLLINGTON, GUESTLING and BULVERHYTHE as well as the enfoeffed manors of SEDLESCOMBE, CROWHURST, ICKLESHAM and BEXHILL to be held in the service of my Tenant in Chief Arcavius, Earl of Sussex in exchange for ten knight’s service. Additionally, I charge SIR BLAEN with the defence of the three royal IRON MINES of HASTINGS and grant him income from these mines of £6 annually.
In Game terms: Town plus four manors, grant (inheritable), for 10 knight service to Earl Arcavius. Annual income £48 (£10 + (4x£6)), four enfoeffed manors with vassal knights income £8 (4x£2); ALSO £6 income from iron mines. Glory: 48 from income, 8 from castle (motte and bailey). One Time Glory: 200 (Baron).
And finally Sir Arcavius - still work to do on this one as regards the economics but I reckon Sussex has been so heavily plundered and depopulated that it may take some time to figure out anyway..
I, Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon, King of Logres, High-King of all Britain and Wledig of the Tribes of Cymru, Imperator and Caesar of Britannia by the Grace of God and His Virgin Mother, for the great service granted to me, my father and my kingdom by his wise counsel and prowess in the great Battle of Badon and many diverse struggles of the Realm, grant to this loyal, noble and valiant knight THE RIGHT HONOURABLE SIR ARCAVIUS THE EQUES, MARSHAL of LOGRES for the duration of his life and that of all his heirs the BARONY OF PEVENSEY and the COUNTY and EARLDOM OF SUSSEX including the RAPES OF CHICHESTER, ARUNDEL, BRAMBER, LEWES, PEVENSEY and HASTINGS and the CASTLES of ALDINGBOURNE, CHICHESTER, LEWES, WILMINGTON, HERSTMONCEUX, PEVENSEY, BODIAM and HASTINGS to be held in my service and the service of my line in exchange for sixty knight's service and the provision of one hundred footmen for the royal muster.
In Game terms: Holding: About one third of Sussex (demense lands) plus one third of Sussex (subenfoeffed to heroes of Badon). Annual income: Approx £300 from direct holdings, £60 from vassals, more from court fees . Glory: 100 from income, 64 from castles. One Time Glory: 500

That sounds awesome Morningkiller. A widespread campaign with land, armies and politics should really allow you to use some of the new supplements and stretch the capabilities of the game.
It would be really interesting to see how it goes.
Any plans to post updates? (hint)

Thanks.
We've done the first session in Sussex. A few widows got married but young Sir Aeron with Hate (saxons) 21 is still grieving for the death of his father at Badon. When he met his potential bride he snapped and told her she could either go to a nunnery for the rest of her life and leave her children held as hostages or the whole lot of them could be sent into exile. She was on a boat to the continent later that day with a death sentence on herself and any children that return to Sussex. Hate (landlord) is up to 11 in his lands already (his father killed Aelle Bretwalda at Netley Marsh) so I think things will get interesting.
I've been working on some writeups of holdings and bodging together a County administration mini-game based on Book of the Manor over the last couple of days. Nearly good to go. I'll post it when it is tided up.

I've done up some docs for what we have so far. Here is the county-wide BoM mini-game.
It should tide us over til we get the BoEstate. Needs BoM to run.

This is the rest of the stuff I've done up.
A welcome pack for each of the PKs introducing their fief and giving some options and requirements.
A list of most of the manors of Sussex. Plenty empty for Arcavius to reward his good household knights as we fill in the gaps.
And a speech by Arthur in which he divides up the conquered lands.

Ran a feast tonight. Looks like Sir Pedivere is another saxon hater and his men are predominantly Silchester thugs. Could get a bit tense.
Bishop Hugh of Chichester was buttering up the Romans and looking to get some serious cathedral building going so the heathens can be saved.
Arcavius was making great progress with his new saxon wife. After a crit while dancing he misread the signals and fumbled an ill-timed flirting attempt. Embarassing.
He then denied Sir Aeron permission to marry a pretty young cymric girl (the daughter of one of Blaen's vassals). He was pissed off that Sir Aeron didn't marry the saxon widow like he was told. Sir Aeron is not happy.
The Knights of Sword Lake mounted up and decided to show the good folk of Sussex what real heroes do. Ditching his bodyguards Arcavius went adventuring. I think this will become a sore point for the knights in his retinue in years to come.
They went after the Knucker, a nasty dragon with a taste for maidens who lives in a horrible lake near Littlehampton in Arundel. Aelle Bretwalda once offered his daughters hand to the thegn who could slay it but no saxon ever completed the adventure. It got real.

Seems that Sussex is infested with Dragons. Some billiant old stories here
http://www.sussexarch.org.uk/saaf/dragon.html#main4
The tale of Jim Puttock killing the Knucker with a poisioned pie is sublime.
