On p35 it says that a husband's starting Knight skill is Age + Modifiers, with modifiers accruing based on the social class of the husband's father but also his age when starting play.

As written therefore a typical 'older husband' will have a Knight skill of 41 [Age: 14 + (avg 7d6 = 24) = 39, +0 for class, +2 for age].

Since they are never younger than 20, would it not be simpler to just say that husbands have a starting knight skill at 20? Then modify for age from there. This would give:

Youngest possible 'young' husband: Knight 10*
Youngest possible 'older' husband: Knight 12*
Oldest possible 'young' husband: Knight 20*
Typical 'older' husband: Knight 22*
Oldest possible 'older' husband: Knight 28*

(*) -10 for commoner, -2 for esquire, +1 for officer, +2 for nobleman

I am missing something from your equation.
Wouldn't the oldest knight = 56 years old (14+42) + 8 (age modifier) = 64?

Which is an utterly ridiculous skill to have.
I can see the curve needs to be readjusted.

That is the Knight skill using the rules as written.

Agreed.

I can see the curve needs to be readjusted.
Hence my suggestion of using a flat starting value of 20 for the Knight skill of all husbands rather than their age when they enter the game. The oldest possible husband modifies this by +8 for his age of 56 to give a Knight skill of 28, which is then modified by his social background (so he could go as high as skill 30 or as low as skill 18).

Alternatively you could use the same progression as the one given in the Older Wives table on p21, but then why have an age modifier in that case since the table is already keyed off the spouse's age?

Make it so

This change has been made in the latest revision (1.2). It's not up on DriveThruRPG yet, but will be — soon!
