Huh... odd. Most dictionaries I see say Kǝmrik, which would yield more Kahmrik wouldn't it?

I dunno, we might need a Welsh speaker to settle it. But the first inkling I had was when my wife was taking Welsh lessons (podcasts), which said the "y" in this context was pronounced as a "u". Then, while researching my list of Cymric names I kept coming across the same convention, again and again.

Plaid Cymru, a welsh political party, is pronounced Plyeed Kum-ree, at least by the Welsh. The Welsh speaker in my group also says Cymric should be pronounced Kum-ric. We all still say Kim-ric tho :)

No. The schwa sound is "uh." That would be consistent with my "KUM-ric" example.

Interesting. I wonder if this is an issue of spoken differences between the North and South, despite what would be dramatically correct.

From a website on Welsh pronunciation:

Y - has two different pronunciations. In all but the last syllable of a word it's pronounced as a U - as in English 'fun'. When it is in the last syllable of a word it is pronounced as an i - as in English 'is'.
