Hi,
I'm interested in acquiring print-on-demand copies of KAP 5.1 and the GPC from RPGNow but a recent review by a customer has got me worried:

The print on demand version of the book I received, however, left something to be desired. In hardcover, the covers were extremely warped and the pages rippled into several waves so that the book cannot lay flat. So extreme a curve was present that the lower corner of the cover coating are pulling open.

Is this something you guys have experienced? We're talking about a hundred dollars worth of books, I'd be really pissed if they came in like described above. I've ordered a couple of book from Lulu (another POD site) which apparently uses the same printing company and didn't have any issues. However, it was just for thin (hundred-ish pages) hardcovers, not big books like KAP and the GPC.

Also it seems that the 20$ PDF isn't bookmarked? Any possibility of an update? With up to date errata?

Many thanks.

I can only speak for myself. I have that book, in hardcover, and I have no warping whatsoever.

Here are some pictures:

I can't say that your experience will be the same for a certainty, but you should be able to return defective books to Drivethru without too much hassle. I also can't speak to the durability of these books, since I haven't had mine for long and my campaigns been on sort of hiatus for a few months, but it seems to me comparable to books made by other good RPG publishers, like Pinnacle (Savage Worlds). In fact, I can honestly say I was surprised by how good the quality was. As for the printing, the blacks are very rich and solid, though the "ink" has a bit of a sheen to it, but I believe these are basically run on a Docutech (think industrial strength, high-tech laser copier) so it's to be expected.

Good luck, and let us know about your experience.

Best,

T.

There's always a Risk of Ruin in any manufactured product. They all, though theoretically identical, come out slight different, and shipped items have an additional RoR due to the post office or other shipper - thus their will always be dissatisfied customers. Greg in my experience has always associated with the better manufactures (who are trying to make good product rather than just grab you money).

Looking at Taliesin's photos. I saw books with the leaves sewn together rather than glued, so they should be fairly durable, but the covers look less durable and might detach from the books or starts to break up at the corners. the gutter [ the "valley" between the pages of an open book] seems pretty high which increases the chance of the covers coming off.

Edit: The pages have been sewn together using the traditional method, each leaf is four pages and a bundle of the leaves have been folded together and then the bundles sewn together. The pages will not fall out has often happens with merely glued books, nor should they pull out as happens with cheap books that every leaf an individual page and sewn together.

My softcover GPC came in perfect condition. I am actually impressed as the binding is pretty strong.

Why push your luck buying them both at once? Incrementalism is the answer here, my friend. Just get the rulebook. Then, in about a month, get the GPC!

Normally I'd say shipping costs to Canada. But I went and checked and in this case shipping the two books together costs the same as one after the other.

Thanks.

Thanks Greg for the precision that's reassuring.

Anyone know if the French version from Les Editions Icare is superior in term of content or quality to the english POD version?
The language isn't a problem since it is my mother tongue and we tend to always play RPGs in french even though we own english rulebooks 95% of the time. That said, I've seen the PDF preview for the french book and apart from some pretty cool art pieces, I much prefer the layout in the english book.

Anyway, if anyone has seen both I'd be interested to know your opinion.

Thanks once more.

I have the POD version of 5.1 and mine is perfect. I was very impressed by it's quality. A friend of mine even looked it over last night as he's thinking of getting back into Pendragon and it impressed him enough to order his own.

I have french version, but not english POD one.
About content, there are some additionnal contents in french version : one original scénario, plus the first part of GPC (Uther's period), and how to create a roman character (part of BoKL i guess).
Most artworks are not the same : many more than english edition, some beautiful original ones, and other from old supplements or previous version (3rd edition for exemple).
Knighting ceremony is missing.
And Alas, too much typos ...
I really like the cover, but have some issues with the book itself. In fact, i think it's too thick.
Despite these problems i think it's a pretty book, and it's important to support this french edition. :)

Thanks Lusus and Tontione. That's exactly the kind of feedback I wanted.
