So, I was musing about Galeholt's death...
551: Galeholt is said to be ill and there is increased raiding in the north. Implication is that Galeholt's vassals are running loose now that their duke is no longer healthy enough to keep them in check. The vassals are mainly fighting each other at this stage... probably trying to improve their own standing to be the next guy when Galeholt kicks the bucket.
552: More raiding in the North. The vassals (referred to as -former- lords of Galeholt's realm, significantly) are explicitly fighting each other, conquering each other's lands (Brian takes Out Isles). Despite this happening, Galeholt seems well enough to organize a regal (!) tournament that includes King Arthur himself (Surluse Tournament 552). But he doesn't do anything about his fighting vassals? This seems odd to me. Could have a note that Galeholt rouses himself for the Tournament and browbeats his vassals into behaving? And he confirms Brian's conquest because kicking Brian out would be just too much work and he recognizes that he is dying anyway?
553: Galeholt still does nothing. Raiding continues in the North, although a bit more muted (maybe due to Galeholt snarling at them during 552)?
554: Galeholt hears that Lancelot is dead (false rumor) and he kicks the bucket. Why is Galeholt not on the Grail Quest, like everyone else in the RTK? Perhaps he was too ill to attend Pentecost. Certainly he has been mentioned being ill loads of times. However, the description of the aftermath of his death is already happening! "When news of the duke’s death reaches those parts of his former realm, the various leaders make statements of independence, then prepare to conquer each other, vowing that they will become the next duke and rule over all of their neighbors." That is what they have been doing ever since from 551 onwards!
Galeholt (Galahalt in Malory) shows up in Malory only for the Surluse Tournament and is practically indistinguishable from everyone else. Granted, he is mentioned to be a cousin or some such of one of the throwaway characters later in Palomides' saga.
In the Vulgate Cycle, he gets a better, more in-depth treatment. Does anyone happen to recall when he dies in the Vulgate Cycle? I -thought- it was during Lancelot's madness, but I could be mistaken about this. If it is during Lancelot's madness (547-549, and missing from Camelot until Christmas 551), then there is a contradiction between Vulgate Cycle and Malory when it comes to the Surluse Tournament. Since Galeholt is clearly a VG character, I would fix this by having the tournament happen somewhere else, hosted by someone else. This allows the death of Galeholt a couple of years earlier, too, which explains why all the hell is starting to break lose in the North in early 550s, with his strong hand gone. This would resolve the current contradiction of the timeline in the Galeholt's lords, by having Galeholt die in 549 or 550.
