I'm a huge fan of Norse mythology and am a history major focusing on northern European history. That said, the Land of Giants book calls to me, and I'd love to run a game using it. Can it still be used with the current rules? I know it has rules for magician characters in it, and those went away after 4th edition, but I was wondering how well the book would work with the new rules. Anyway, please let me know. I really don't know the rules just yet, so I'm trying to make sure this will work for me.

Thanks in advance.

It will be no problem for you to use LoG with the current rules. Indeed, there has been no major changes in the rules between ed 3, 4, 5 and 5.1 respectively. (1st edition has some major differences from all the other editions, but material for the 1st edition can still be used with the current edition with only some minor tweaks). You will find that the character creation system in LoG, which ties in with how characters were made in 3rd and 4th edition, is rather different from KAP 5/.5.1/BookofKnightsandLadies, but it is in no in way incompatible with a 5/5.1 ed game. It will work just fine.

And, of course, as you write, you can't use the bits about magic unless you can get your hands on a 4th ed rule-book.

So just go for it.

And good luck with the history-studies!

Just what Skarpskytten said.

As long as you are using the same character generation for everyone, it should be OK. Granted, some of the good rollers might have a slight advantage if they roll up a son of a lord or something, but even that is not a huge issue. Or you could even use 5th ed chargen if you have it, and just use the LoG chargen for background flavor. (Even mixing the character generators would not pose a problem, but might be perceived as 'unfair' by some players.)

The game still plays the same, so no problem there.

'tis true that 3/4 character generations is really random; one player might end up with a goathereder and one with a tribal chieftain. I guess it can be described as a bug or a feature depening on your preferences.
