View Full Version : Book of Battle and other new GS publications
Just curious if the Book of Battle is any closer to publication?
Also, and I think I speak for everyone on the boards, is there anything I (or we) can do to speed up the process? I think most of us would be glad to put in some time fact checking, play testing, and/or proof reading if it would be of any service.
Also there was some mention a while ago, on one of the treads, about a campaign supplement that would push the campaign start date for GPC back to (about) 415. Any progress on that? Also does "it" have a name?
Sorry if I'm pestering, but I'm just curious.

I remember, back in the days when "Pendragon" was owned by Green Knight Publishing, talk of a prequel supplement called "Imperial Isle"'; could that be it, Rob?

There was a large playtest of the battle system this weekend just gone at Tentacles Omega, Bacharach, with about 22 players. The system seems pretty solid, just a bit of tweaking needed. I'm sure that Greg will be along shortly to comment further! Unfortunately I was rubbish and was beaten to the enemy camp for some looting and pillaging by a Frenchman (hello Jean!) - so I now owe him 5 Livres due to a side bet...

Well, Greg beeing Greg did some tweaking right then and there. As Susanne remarked during Gregs explaining of the rules "This was different last week...."
But the system of Battle Intensity seems to be reasonable robust.
You could fill in an evaluation/questionare form after the Battle of Camlann, and I believe most people did. Greg will probably want to review these, and then make some final changes. But as you know YPMV

Each passing day rings it 24 hours closer.

Thank you for the offer.
I've got people lined up for this.

There has been talk of an "Ambrosius Period" book, but is not scheduled since there is no material.
There is a large "what Grandpa did" kind of solo for people from anywhere in Britain, and it is coming along quite nicely. It's quite complex, and not scheduled, but definitely being worked on.

Well, Greg being Greg did some tweaking right then and there.
Since, after all, that is what a test play is about.
As Susanne remarked during Gregs explaining of the rules "This was different last week...."
Just to be clear, what is different is that the game we played was modified from the basic system for a game with 22 players.
But the system of Battle Intensity seems to be reasonable robust.

Most comments were entirely positive. I am convinced that I'm done, and will begin the final processes to get it into print. But there is no deadline, no projected deadline, and no planned deadline until it is as good as I can do for now. Everyone working on this is an unpaid volunteer, and the work they do I find excellent, but I will not press or rush volunteers.
So Don't hold your breath, but rejoice mightily when it comes out and buy one immediately, so I can begin the next project.

(A friend of mine is pretty good at design/layout stuff. He is the one who made the KAP magazines at this other thread (http://www.weareallus.com/theroundtable/index.php?topic=209.0), if you saw them. If you like him/us to contribute, I'll ask him.)

If the Book of Battle sees the light of day within the next 3 months then I'll be very happy. That's when I'm due to run the first GPC battle (Mearcred Creek). I'm assuming the new rules can be dropped in over the old and from the small tidbits I've read it sounds great!

Might you be selling it as a pdf? I realize that security is difficult, but I have the impression that things with small, dedicated cult followings don't suffer much, because the fans feel more uneasy about "stealing" from people than faceless organizations.

PDF? C'mpn guys. Thats all I hear lately. Just buy the Books. They are well worth it. How can this genius of gaming continue to publish brilliant material, if he is not properly funded? I know life is hard and bills are many, etc, etc... we just can not afford the book,,,, crap crap crap, blah blah blah..... But I for one enjoy roleplaying more than I enjoy ALMOST anything on this planet, so..... If you are a PASSIONATE role player U know in your heart of hearts that 20-50 dollars will not break u, and will certainly bring u far more joy than it will put u out. That said...... Greg..... U are not only King of the nerds... U are the GOD of the nerds G-man.... We all love u, and I for one am SOOOOOOOOOO impressed that u make the time to talk on this forum as much as you do to your FANS. No other RPG LEGEND does that. Thank you. 8)

I thought it was further along than that... Probably just wishful thinking on my part. Still I'll look forward to both.
I DO have an MA in history, and I'm working on the PhD (not to brag or anything ::)) so if I can put those to work for the greater good of Pendragon I'd be more than glad.
I have come to believe that Pendragon is the cocaine of RPGs... Just enough is never enough.
Maybe I can break the habit by switching to Call of Cthulhu....

IF people actually buy the pdf and don't pirate it, I'm sure there's a point at which the price could be lowered but a greater profit could be had, as there would be no printing or shipping costs.

Some cases, like myself, you're not getting dead tree sales from anyway.
90% or more of my gaming purchases are PDF. Not so much because they are cheaper, tho' if I don't wind up running them, they are; but because I can review them on my ebook reader, and read them on the computer, and search them. Also, the ability to print them reduced size, or print maps enlarged, or to print individual pages (like forms) without having to mangle the book to do so.
Moreover, many people (not me, but a great many people) put up pirate scans only when no legit PDF's are available. For Example, the TSR stuff doubled the number of pirate feeds the day WotC announced "no more PDFs"...
A large number of people d/l scans of stuff they already have on dead tree as well; the ability to search is really nice when the scans are OCRed, or the pdf is generated by the author.
And for stuff I actually print at 8.5x11", it gets bound with either combs or page protectors... then again, my Arrowflight RPG book just wound up being disassembled and put into page protectors as well. I wish it were available as a PDF....

I am sensitive to the usefulness, desirability and value of PDFs.
However, simply put, I do not have permission to print pdf's.
Sorry.

I'd rather have the books TBH. I have purchased every Pendragon .pdf available on DriveThru, but only as backups of the books I already have. The pdf's make things easier when I'm sitting at my PC and need to locate a bit of info, but there is no substitute for the books when I'm actually running the game. Of course, I *could* print out the pdf's but then I'd have to bind them, and the the quality would never match the real thing.

Well said Sir Parmalot!!!!!! well said. Quality!!!! That is what is important, my fellows!!!!! Quality!!! ;)
Still the freedom to hit ctrl-F and search the text is a great feature. Think of all the posts on the boards that begin with the phrase "I know I read in the rules .... but I can't find it...." If you're not sure of the book it was in, you can just search whole directory. In my mind at least, the major advantage pdfs have is the ability to search.
Then again, it might be possible to build a search engine into Greg's website, that gives you the page number for terms you're searching for. So you type in Saracen, and it gives you all the pages where the word is found in all the various supplements without giving you the actual text. Then you'd actually have to pull out your hard copy and turn to the appropriate page to get the info. I would think that would be easy to program since the books are all in pdf already (except BM and BKL but I presume Greg could easily get those converted for such a purpose). The best of both worlds maybe?

What we need here is a pinned thread with the status of the Pendragon franchise. When the status of a product changes or Greg has a comment about it, we will be able to see there has been an update. :)

Maybe I agree with this, whatever it means; but if this is a big advantage, I am sure the Web Steward will make it so, soon. ;)

Making a threat like the posting rules or Errata. It always stays on top and will just be for updates on the various products.

OK, I'm now going to unsticky this as...
There's now a section on the forum for the answers you're looking for:
The Word from Camelot - http://www.weareallus.com/theroundtable/index.php?board=13.0
Greg will post updates and news on Pendragon and its supplements here for convenient reference.
Many thanks to Greg for doing Word from Camelot. I still can't wait for BoB and BoA, but knowing updates will be regular makes things a bit more manageable.
