Hi everyone,

I have some doubts about the Rearguard rule in the Book of Battle. This rule is explained in pag. 47 however, I have some questions:

- If a rearguard unit appears, How do you determine the kind of unit żone random?

- When you use the maneuvers "Follow" and "Chase", there is a number of enemy units to fight, but there is a chance of rearguard. What does that mean? Is the rearguard unit in addition to those enemy units, or is it instead them, or are all these units a rearguard units?

- The rule also says "They might get the Reserve Bonus as well." And in pag. 59 it says "Facing fresh enemy reserves, -10 to the Unit Commander’s Battle skill." So, my doubt is: When you decide to Follow or to Chase, you have already done the Unit Commander's Battle Roll against the Unit Intensity. So, How this modifier affects the game? Is it modifying the next Unit Battle Roll (after have fought them)? or Have you to repeat the Unit Commander's Battle Roll for this round?

- In the pag. 46 it says:
"When an enemy army is moving away from the Killing Zone (trying to avoid or get out of a battle), that backward movement reduces the options available to the near-victorious army. Most of the maneuvers would find no enemy available. Only these options exist. They are explained in detail on pp. 46–48."
How does this affect to special situations in Unit Commander's Battle Roll (critical and fumbles)? e.g. If the Unit Comander Fumbles, you may have been charged if the Unit Intensity had a success, or you may have a surprise if the Unit's Intensity also fumbled. Or if the Unit Commander has a critical result, the Unit has a opportunity. So, are these special cases working if the enemy is retreating, or have you just the follow or stop options? In this case, what is the point to make a Unit Commander's Battle Roll during this round?

Thank you very much to share your wisdom :)

- I would use the normal rules. So in a chase 2 opponents at half strength each, but with a +5 to their weapon skill.
- The rearguard is the units rolled.

- As far as I know using reserves is determined at the start of the round, before the battle roll is made. They are in addition to the normal units rolled. If you do not have a rearguard they are still there as an extra fresh unit.

- I use the table on page 33. So if you still lose the roll against the intensity apparently part of the enemy is not retreating yet and you must either stand or stand vs charge. If you have a (partial) win the choices are limited due to the retreating army.
