View Full Version : Book of Magic?

While I know earlier editions had magic within their main books, 5th edition does not. When I searched for any further information, I came across a post on these forums from 2013 about an in development Book of Magic, that seemingly has not seen the light of day just yet. The post did mention searching for additional help in producing the book however. I thus have two inquiries.

What is the status of the Book of Magic?
Is writing help still sought?

It is, and writing help is not required, but play testing might be, at some point...

I can't offer a date at this time. I can only confirm that it is indeed in development — and fairly advanced.

Book of Magic does indeed exist and it will enter playtesting this Summer. The timeline for the book depends on the playtesting. We'll update as soon as there is something definitive. Well, one thing is definitive already: the manuscript is outstanding!

Would it be possible to get in on the playtesting?

Now, this is great news indeed.

I wouldn't want to encourage anyone to think this
It is not entirely my call
but too many testers makes it very difficult
and in my experience, most people have a life and cannot keep up with the needed pace for testing
Sorry

Stewart and Greg I have nothing but time on my hands and a group that can play test the book of magic remember I am still using the old magic system for my group and was one who was complaining about 5e not having magic, and wanting it updated, so me and my group would love to play test this, if you would let us. So keep me in mind please.

Thank you captain, but at the moment we have sufficient test players

I met with and spoke to the author of BoMagic last weekend
I am quite chuffed with how this is coming along
It's gonna be a doozy!
Nothing small here
even with the Book of Miracles (saintly magic) separated out!

A Book of Magic would be most welcome for one character I have in mind who, while he could be made into a knight with no magical ties, would fit better as one who knows the art of magic.

If you want to play regular Pendragon that would move him in a very harsh direction according to table 4-3 on page 76 of KAP 5.1: DISHONORABLE ACTS:

Plundering a holy place of your religion >>> Change in Honor: –1
Treason (against your lord) >>> Change in Honor: –5
Learning to cast magical spells >>> Change in Honor: –8

Well then, he would just need to keep such secret. It would probably help to up his honor in other ways, in which to counteract such a penalty. Could perhaps provide for an interesting and challenging experience for my character, something to overcome and given enough time he could perhaps change such a view on magic once he makes a name for himself and proves his honor in other ways.

He would be more a scholar knight anyway, more focused on learning and knowledge then in the realm of combat. Courtly intrigues and the art of wordplay would also be important, given his charm and upbringing, as to that of romance in with how he will view many things.
