While looking around the internet looking for ideal images and castle floor planes I came accross some interesting stuff I thought I would share
The medieval town of Monteriggioni (sp?) in Tuscany is a useful exemplar for a generic walled town. Note the scale of the town (quite tiny by modern standards) surrounded by crop fields. With the gates closed, the walls and a small number of guards with crossbows could hold off bands of bandits, orcs, or even the occasional ogre. The square in the upper center (in front of what appears to be a church) would probably host a market by day, and be a social gathering spot at night.
