what do folks think Guédelon castle would classify as?
for folks that don't know it's an experimental archaeology sight in France where they are building a 13th century castle, started in '97 it's expected to take 25 years to build it and the attached village, full-time staff of about 50-60 work around six months a year on the project and there about 150-200 part-time volunteers
when finished it will have four towers and a gatehouse, but has a grate hall in place of a keep, the role of stronghold is instead bean taken up by the Grate Tower where the civil and living roles are filled by the Grate Hall, under normal conditions it would have housed 30 people
for those interested their is a five part English language documentary series that covers one season of the build called "Secrets of the Castle"

I'd term it as a common (medium) castle in 4th edition terms.
In 5th edition, it actually would depend a lot more on the actual area it occupies (how large) and what fortifications it has (DV, defense value), rather than the old small/medium/large terminology which mixed size and complexity. In other words, the common castle is almost the same as the small castle, but it has towers, too, in 4th edition. In 5th edition, they both might be small (in area), but one has higher DV (more towers).
You want to see an example of a large castle, see Krak de Chevaliers.

I just wish I'd learnt modern languages at uni instead of Old & Middle English, I may, retain the skill set 20 years on, seeing as how I could go out and talk to folks or read publications and not have no use for it, apart from swearing at folks in what is taken for gibberish.
if I'd done that perhaps I'd be able to read the original web-sight that looks to have more hard info.

Ok gone a bit of research the curtain walls are 4m thick hard sandstone faced rubble filled and will be 6-8m high crenelated overlooking a 2-3m deep dry moat.
the Grate Tower will be around 30m other three towers around 10m tall (as far as I can tell) and it will have a twin towered gate house.
I estimate the bailey in about 100m across trapezium.
the Grate Hall is two stories tall with Gallery and Basement.
it will have a Chapel in the 2nd largest tower
Tiled Roofed and floored, fireplaces in the kitchen (as you would expect), Grate Hall and Lords chambers (ATM only 2 stacks can be seen).
when completed it will have rendered curtain walls & Towers (exceedingly common to be almost universal) and lime washed (also very common but not near universal)
apparently in the mid 1200's France this was coincided normal for a moderately affluent minor lord.
During the Build it will need a Blacksmith, not just for Ironwork without him Mason work stops after two days and Woodwork within the week. since they can't order them in they have a Tweilery (tile workshop) and Tile Kiln (apparently money spinners for the lord during and after construction when he isn't using the output), other essentials Carpentry/Joinery workshop, Paint/Die house, Rope Maker, and of cause the Water Mill (with it's mill pond) Potter and Quarry.
