There has been great talk about starting an Email-based game of Pendragon. If you are interested, post whether you would like to play or GM.

I'm game. I'd rather just play, since I'm already running my local group through the GPC.

if no one else would run one i would, but my schedule is tough and im afraid it would be pretty slow. im preparing for my wedding, adopting a child ( and have on of my own!), of course working full time, and playing pendragon saturday nights as well. if i had my choice, playing would be ideal. but i am interested to see which brave soul would be the hero-GM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait to see how this all goes!

Hi Gents,

I could be tempted depending on how much commitment we talking about e.g. who many emails etc a week, also what form will this game take forum type game, skype etc.

Also will this be off the cuff or going through GPC?

Cheers,

It would be ideally all emails, with some kind of instant messaging system on the side (AIM, MSN, etc.).

I'm thinking we could do a years worth of play every one or two weeks... whatever that means for emails.

As for the gameplay... I'd be fine with either. I myself am running the GPC for my group of friends, so I'd welcome the change of scenery.

I'm happy to GM! However, if I do, it'll be forum based, not email based, and I can only take a couple of extra players because I have some friends who are interested already. Depending on numbers, it might be best to have an email game run by Kevlar and a forum game run by myself.

I think a Forum based game would be best and possibly easiest to be run.

Running a full pbem could be very time consuming me thinks, maybe PM intrigue rolls and personal stuff!!!

How many players can you take Calarion?

Could it even be run on here, could Greg/We Admin add a section for PBP?

Sounds good to me. I'd really prefer to play rather than GM, so I'll do whatever - it doesnt have to be email at all.

Forums would be nice; these boards don't have a huge population, but I know I'd like to spectate if I can't make it in.

Edit: If I didn't make it clear, I'd like to join as a PC.

Also, it looks like we have a fair number of people wanting to join, perhaps more than one GM could comfortably manage. I know that some forum GMs choose their 4-6 players by having prospective players submit a character bio/outline and give precedence based on that.

Calarion
07-21-2009, 07:54 AM
I have two players, and I prefer four player groups. So, I'll take two more! One of those two might drop out, if he does we'll have another space.

I'm not sure how to decide who should get the last two spots. All three current participants are Pendragon virgins, so I don't feel like going for talent auditions, since super-knowledgeable people might not fit with those of us blundering through the rules and the conventions of the game. I also don't feel like doing 'first in first served' because it irks me.

If there are any other Pendragon virgins out there, I'll offer them the spot first. After that... people who aren't currently playing in a game get first dibs? (GMs count as not playing, but no-game-whatsoever trumps it.) I think that sounds fairest.

bigsteveuk

I am tempted to say I will run it prob just (GPC).

My only concern is time (what with work, little one and wife and other rpg commitments), player expectation as I have never done anything like this before. I hate messing people about or wasting peoples time.

Also Merlin as your the man around it, would it be possible to get a play by post section here?

Dafydd ap Dafydd

I think as long as we're moving along at a clip of everyone consistently posting 1-2/week, we should be okay.

In theory, yes. Let me check with Greg as its his forum and we can take it from there.

Until it's all sorted no harm people doing Character Bio and creating characters.

Couple of questions.

1.) By the sound of it there will be 2 games who is playing in which,Game 1 (Calarion) & Game 2 (Me or Another)

Who is playing in which?

2) Are we going to use book of knights and ladies?

3) Is the GPC going to be the back bone of the Campaign?

4) How often a people expected to post, excluding life, emergencies holidays etc.

5) Does anyone have anyone have any tips/tools or previous exp they can bring to help run the game

6) Can people think of anymore?

Laters,

BigSteveUK

Answers for my game:

1) I can only confirm the existance of Game #1 :p The only players I know of thus far are one or two friends of mine, who intend to register for this board in the near future.

2) As I do not own it, no. If anyone really really wants to not be from Salisbury, that's ok I guess, but I'd rather keep with basic 5th edition characters.

3) Yes.

4) Ideally I'm aiming at daily, though I know that some days this will be easier than others because I'm quite busy with university! So shall we say once every couple of days, give or take?

5) My notes on how I run a forum game are in the other thread. Regular posting patterns, quick pacing to maintain interest.

6) I am very, very excited because I've wanted to run a Pendragon game ever since I got the main rulebook, almost a year and a half ago!

:)

One of my friends has decided to opt out for the time being. So, I have three spare spots! (He might join later, in which case it's a five player game).

By my count, we have two GMs (Steve and myself) and seven potential players - I hope I didn't miss anyone!

Kevlar
Palomydes
Isaachee
Fuzzyref
Merlin
Doorknobdeity
Dafydd

That makes three for me (plus my one extra makes four) and four for Steve, and no one has to miss out. So who is playing in which?

Calarion, you said you prefer players who aren't currently involved in another game, and since I number among those unfortunate few, looks like I'm throwing in my lot with you. I'd like to use the Book of Knights and Ladies if I could, but I'm not adamant. I'll have the background and sheet up later, maybe tomorrow. I'm thinking a Roman city boy (homeland is London) who is displeased both about the fall of classical civilization and the rustic, unfashionable setting of Salisbury.

I should always be able to manage at least one post a day, and I should generally have fairly regular access to AIM. Exactly what time I post will vary with work and school, but I shouldn't have to go more than 24 hours without.

Edit: Actually, instead of making the knight's race actually Roman as per the book, I think it would be better if I used the Italians: not only are they available as the free online preview (http://www.weareallus.com/pendragon/italians.pdf) for those, like you, who lack the book, but the Italian race is also thematically closer to what I'm looking for. Still a native of London, though, if you can swallow that.

And here it is:

Lucius Vispanius

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/doorknobdeity/Vispanii.png

http://www.scribd.com/doc/17598067/Lucius-Vispanius?secret_password=dum5l958pjesi1z1apk

Lucius comes from a very old Roman patrician family; long ago, for reasons lost to history, his family settled in Britain and have been doing well for itself ever since. Lucius, however, is displeased with the current state of the world. Bad enough that the emperor had abandoned the Vispanius family, as he had all the Romano-British, but Rome itself has fallen to barbarians! Clearly, the wisdom and beauty of the ancients is slowly slipping from the world, to be replaced by the grunts and imitations of their barbarian "successors." Lucius does what he can to preserve classical civilization, but it's a hard, thankless job, even in mostly-Roman London. Things have been getting worse recently. After the recent death of his father, Lucius was set to become the head of his family. However, through a tangled web of feudal obligations, Lucius' father had owed fealty to Earl Roger of Salisbury for a manor there. Swept away by visions of romance and the pastoral poetry of Virgil and other writers, Lucius declined his inheritance and instead asked for his father's Salisbury holdings, opting for the bucolic life of a rural vassal knight. However, once he got there, he discovered that country life is hard and poor, cow pastures are much less romantic in person, and his rustic neighbors were none too impressed by his skillful readings of Ovid and Cicero. Furthermore, since his inheritance as head of the family passed instead to an uncle, his mother and siblings have made it clear that he is not welcome back in London, and so he is stuck in this pig-infested backwater. Never has the light of civilization seemed farther away than in this age of darkness. If only there were some sort of . . . rebirth, or resurgence, or revival of interest in the enlightened ways of ancient culture!

Lucius more than anything wants for civilization?by which he means proper classical civilization?to return. The medieval period, as far as he's concerned, is just something humanity is wasting time with between the classical period and the Renaissance (which he's sure is just around the corner). Step one is getting a leader strong enough to be a proper Roman emperor?and not this silly barbarian Uther, either.

Welcome aboard, Sir Doorknobdeity! I'm glad to have you in the group. I'm happy with Lucius being in the game, since he's got a good reason to be hanging out in Salisbury. GM's Seal of Approval!

07-23-2009, 07:11 AM
Calarion I can join up. I'm GMing my own game, but still, I'd like to get some actual playing done.

Do you want our characters and background posted here or somewhere else later?

Calarion
07-23-2009, 09:51 AM
Welcome to the group, Master Kevlar! You can post it here if you want. I was planning to run the actual RPG in two threads - one of which would have all the game stats and character sheets and so forth at the top, and then out of character discussion underneath it; the other would be the main play thread. So you don't have to post your character here, but then if you want to you can, too! :)

Merlin

Can I fill the quota? I'm running an fairly erratic GPC campaign, but never get to play! I'll post a character later if I get the thumbs up.

Calarion
07-23-2009, 10:46 AM
Congratulations, you have the last spot! Welcome aboard!

Oh, when everyone is making their characters - please DON'T roll for family history. I intend to roll this for everyone at once, so I can tell everyone simultaneously what their characters' ancestors got up to together.

Dafydd ap Dafydd
07-23-2009, 05:27 PM
I'll get a character together tonight (since my books are at home).

Sir Carawydd of Salisbury has the following blazon: On a shield in party per fess, azure and argent, a lyon couchant or

1.) I'd rather play in bigsteve/other's campaign.

2) I would prefer using BoK&L

3) I think we should run the GPC from start to finish.

4) 1-2/week per person should be a minimum pace; I've found in running games via forum or email that the GM's pace sets the party's pace.

5) I've played in 3-4 forum-based/email based RPGs, and I've run two (one ongoing).

Yes, straight 5th edition rulebook Cymrics from Salisbury if you please, the easier for a GPC game. However, if you desperately, deeply want to be something else, that's fine too, just as long as it works easily with the default set-up! :)

Hi Gents,

Ok looks like I am running a game... ??? lol

My Players:-
Fuzzyref
Palomydes the Saracen
Dafydd ap Dafydd

Character Creation:-

Everyone is a Cymric (for now)
From Salisbury
For stats will use std point buy.
Also Chivalry is out and True Knight is in

Traits: Need 80 points from Vengeful, Generous, Proud, Reckless, Trusting and Valorous. Since a strong knight makes his own rules, you can replace the lowest of these traits with your Arbitrary score.
Benefit: +1/5th Hit Points (round nearest)
Glory: 50 glory per year.

Questions for you

If we use the Bok&l how far do you want to take it.

Who has Bok&L?
Roll for Son number?
Roll for Fathers job?
Roll for you lvl?
Roll for Liege Lord

If the whole thing is random, you could end up as a poor esquire?

Or do you wall want to start as number 1 son and a vassal knight with regular income?

PM me you emails and religion and I will send you a character sheet in pdf for you to complete.

Cheers,

BigSteveUK

p.s How do you want to handle dice rolling, i know some sites have a dice tool, but I am more than happy to trust you and let you post your rolls. Choice is yours.

Big Steve, didn't check out the site in a couple days, but if you need a fourth I'm in. I've got all the books so whatever you want to run with I'm in.

Here's my responses:
Who has Bok&L? Yup
Roll for Son number? Yeah
Roll for Fathers job? Yeah
Roll for you lvl? Yeah
Roll for Liege Lord? Yeah

If the whole thing is random, you could end up as a poor esquire? I'm ok with that

Or do you wall want to start as number 1 son and a vassal knight with regular income?Random all the way.

Gents, I learned that if you can print to PDF, you can take your form and print it up as a non-form. Also, I found that, at least in Acrobat 9, I can save the file with all the data intact. Anyone else find they can do this? Steve, I'll send you pdfs of my character sheet and shield.

Since my character ended up being a 7th son of an officer, I changed his heraldry. The blazon is now: On a shield per pale, or and sable, three roses argent, barbed proper, seeded or. The roses, of course, mark cadency for the 7th son, so the family shield is the simple party per pale.

Unfortunately Palomydes the Saracen has had to drop out (real life and all that),3 is cool though.

I have just created a new post called "Once More Background & Data", so for now put your character background in there.

If any of my players want to join Steve's game so that he'll have four players, I won't mind at all. In his favour, he is more experienced then me and has access to more books, and probably has more time to game in. Plus I may or may not have another friend joining at a later date.

If you want to stay put, though, well, that's just awesome! ;D

Steve & Calarion - I don't mind which game I play in - I'm sure both will be great! Calarion, if you want the extra slot for a friend, I'll happily move over, or stay, or whatever! What would be best guys?

I am easy more than happy with 3, more than happy with another.

Now my only concern is

In his favour, he is more experienced then me and has access to more books, and probably has more time to game in.

More experienced if you mean sat round a table for too many years, boring my friends with my waffle and butchering the English language maybe. ;)

Also no experience, nada, none at running a pbp!!

More books, to be honest I intend to keep it fairly simple else I don't think we will get anywhere.

More time, depends on wife, child and work, I love role-play but real life has to take precedence and it's bound to get in the way at times.

Hello,

I haven't checked the forums in a while, but a play-by-email game would be very interesting to me. Don't want to throw a wrench into the works if you're already closed to new players, but I saw from the other post you may not have started yet. I'm a very strong medievalist and hopefully can contribute. Anyway, if it's too late, that's cool, just let me know, I'll be checking back. :)

Wrathbone

PS I haven't actually played Pendragon yet (due to time constraints, thus the email game being interesting) but could read my PDF rules and get a character going within a few days. I work from home so should be available for time demands of email campaign.
