Some questions from my reading of the BotE:

1) Is it correct to say that the "Rich" level of maintenance is the "new Ordinary" for vassal knights?

2) I've rolled for the manor attributes, and one character has a manse in the nearest market town. We don't have any other details. What kind of building is it - wood or stone? How can I describe it? Can it be sold, and for how much?

Any help would be appreciated.

1) No. The £10 manor vassal knight is still spending £6 for the upkeep of himself, his family, his horses and his squire. (Which version of the book do you have?)

2) I'd say it is wood and generally you would be unable ro sell it: it is part of the grant so in principle you only have it as a loan. Ultimately it belongs to the king. If i were to allow a sale I'd probably mske it 10 times the annual income. Remember that your servitium debitum wouldn't change: you still owe that one foot soldier for the £1 rent which you will now have to pay out of your own pocket, too.

I've got 1.3.2. I'm trying to figure out the significance of this passage (BotE, p. 47).

"The normal standards of living are:
◆◆Family: Rich
◆◆Courtiers: Ordinary
◆◆Army: Ordinary
◆◆Servants: Ordinary"

There's no income from it; the manse cuts into one's income by £1.

That is because it is the Book of the ESTATE. The default assumption here is that you are an estate holder, not a one manor vassal knight.

If you want to see the one manor calculation, see p. 38, where the knight's standard of living is the old £6.

Ah, sorry, I mistook it for the tenement. As far as I know, the cost is supposed to reflect the fact that you need to have a skeleton crew there to keep the place from falling apart. There should be some benefit from having such a townhouse, like being able to offer hospitality to visiting knights, if there is a tournament or a court nearby. But in principle, since it is part of the estate, the PK is in the hot seat for seeing the manse maintained, I'd think. I could see an enterprising knight renting it out, though, and turning it into a profit generating special or at least make the ends meet.
