Hey guys,

One of my players now owns three manors via mariage, none of which comes with vassal knights. So, he will need, as per the new economic rules & servitum debitum, to "make" 3 household knights for these.

Easy enough, as he has three younger brothers of age (mind you, the wife's family might look at it funny... :)). He doesn't want to make them vassal knights. My question is = once the brothers are knighted, how much maintenance will he need to pay each year for these knights? 4£ as per the old rules, or are the manors generating enough global revenue that it is taken care of automatically?

Thanks a mil

If you are following the new economy the knights are already accounted for.

All you need to calculate is:
Discretionary Funds = 10% of Customary revenue = £1 / manor (assuming £10 manors) = £3
Standard of living = £5 + 10% of CR = £8 = ordinary still (unless he uses one librum to up it to rich, £9)

Note that the PK vassal knight is one of the three knights so he would have only two household knights.

Also, he would have to equip his brothers with gear: it doesn't simply materialize from thin air (well, the spare might have dad's old equipment).

Hey Morien,

Thanks for the insightful & precise replies as always. I didn't specify, but these 3 manors come on top of the family manor already owned by the PK. That's why I was saying the bride's family might resent such an "overtaking" of family lands. And yup, I know the PK will need to fork out 30£ for each new knight, so 90£. Quite a sum, but he has some treasure and some good friends...

Thanks a bunch

OK, then it is £40 total, leading to:

Army: 4 knights (1 vassal which is the PK, and 3 household knights as you correctly surmissed), 8 foot soldiers for the army, 4 foot soldiers for the garrison (these are already accounted for)
DF: £4 / year to be spent as he wants. More soldiers, extra squires, entourage members to help his adventuring, etc.
Standard of Living: £5+£4 = £9 = Rich.

You are right that he might be smarter to spread the opportunity around some. Taking a household knight from another powerful family and having your brother a slot in their household knights is likely better than massing all the brothers under yourself. Taking one from the bride's family might be smart, too.

As for knighting the brothers, yes, if you want to get them the top of the line horses, then it is around £30 each. Many of the younger sons might get knighted on the cheap, though. A Courser is £10 cheaper than a charger, so you might get away with just £20 or so. And if you get real cheap and just get them the cheapest horse and gear you can find for about £10, knighting feast included. Granted, such a poorly outfitted knight might have trouble finding a household knight place on his own, and I would be tempted to lower his knight value (which is no longer part of KAP Battle rules, but still), treating him more like a cavalryman.
