All—

The latest installment in the Book of Records series is now available on DriveThruRPG! (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/200884/Book-of-Records-Vol-II-Battles?src=newest_since) All three sheets from the Book of Battle, 2nd Edition are included as form-fillable and auto-calculating sheets. The Players' sheet has been tweaked to allow "checks" to be recorded for critical successes.

It's important to note that sheets require Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader (free from Adobe), and were tested on Apple and Windows laptops and desktop machines. Be warned that using third-party PDF readers are not supported and may result in some weirdness.

Just in time for Christmas (barely)! Hope you enjoy it!

Best,

T.

Just skimmed through these using Foxit Reader 8.1. I didn't have any problems.

Good deal. Yeah, there's such a proliferation of PDF readers out there, it's just not possible for us to support them. We did look at it on one or two and did encounter some weirdness, but YMMV. We know they work in the Adobe products!

Thanks Taliesin, this is really a nice Christmas treat! Very useful for GMs and players alike. And a long-awaited one, I would say. The BoB system is very engaging and entertaining, but it's sometimes confusing. This supplement should help a lot toward making it faster and more streamlined. Compliments!
I'm really looking forward to Book of Records, Vol. III for land management.... ;-)

As the nitpicker-in-chief around here, I have read the booklet text carefully and found some corrections to do for the next update:

p.1, col. 2
last para
- Add “the” after “record sheets in”.
- Change “for Mac and has been successfully” to “for Mac and have been successfully”

p. 2, left sidebar
Change “Gamemaster’s” to “Gamemasters”.

p. 2, col. 1
para 3, Unit Intensity
“1)” at line beginning is not pretty. Either put the “1)” in the previous line or shift “Round” to this line.

para 4, Action
Change “Maneuever” to “Maneuver”.

p.2, col. 2
para 5 Battle Events
Change “to right a” to “to write a”.

pp. 3, 5, 7
- The “King Arthur Pendragon” logo is low-definition and it’s pixelated when printed. I suggest inserting a high-resolution logo, like the ones in the form-fillable sheets.
- The “King Arthur Pendragon” logo includes a “5th Edition” specification. Shouldn’t it be “5.1 Edition” (the current edition when BoB 2nd was published) or “5.2 Edition” (the current ed)?
- The copyright notice in the lower left corner is written in a modern, sans-serif font. I suggest using the same font as the rest of the sheet for atmosphere, or at least a serif, classic-looking font like the one used for the main text of the booklet (Garamond?).
- The leftmost vertical line of the table falls in the darker margin of the background picture, where there is a “page below” effect. The effect is not pleasant: it seems that part of this line falls off in the page below. I suggest reducing column width just a little, in order to shift this line a little to the right.
- Would it be possible to rotate these pages to horizontal? This would make reading easier for those who use the booklet with a reader, and wouldn't change anything for those who print it out.

p. 4, col. 1
para 3 Unit Intensity
“UNIT INTENSITY” should be bold.

para 5, Results
It should be the “Unit Commander’s player” or “Leader’s player” (not the GM) who enters the unit results.

p.4, col. 2
para 5 Battle Events
Change “to right a” to “to write a”.

Back cover
- The dropcap initial seems more an “L” (or even a “C”) rather than an “N”. Please check it’s the correct letter.

Best,

Roberto

Just to add to Roberto's (characteristically-excellent) errata list: on the back cover, "indispensable" is misspelled as "indespensible".

Gentlemen —

Thanks for all the feedback. I didn't think to submit this to inimitable Roberto (three other people did review the files) but I won't make that mistake again!

I was able to fix everything above, with a few exceptions:

- The “King Arthur Pendragon” logo is low-definition and it’s pixelated when printed. I suggest inserting a high-resolution logo, like the ones in the form-fillable sheets.

I output the PDF to 300 dpi (it was set to the default 96). Hopefully that will suffice, but, honestly, I'm not to concerned about the print quality of the user's guide. I don't expect printing this document to be a critical use-case.

- The “King Arthur Pendragon” logo includes a “5th Edition” specification. Shouldn’t it be “5.1 Edition” (the current edition when BoB 2nd was published) or “5.2 Edition” (the current ed)?

Well, really, the BoB rules are compatible with 5.0, 5.1, or 5.2 (I think) so this may be splitting hairs a bit. I'm inclined to let it go, because fixing it at this point may introduce other, more substantial errors.

- The copyright notice in the lower left corner is written in a modern, sans-serif font. I suggest using the same font as the rest of the sheet for atmosphere, or at least a serif, classic-looking font like the one used for the main text of the booklet (Garamond?).

Okay, but this is another one of those minor cosmetic things that are more trouble to fix than its worth. Letting this one go.

- The leftmost vertical line of the table falls in the darker margin of the background picture, where there is a “page below” effect. The effect is not pleasant: it seems that part of this line falls off on the page below. I suggest reducing column width just a little, in order to shift this line a little to the right.

Not sure I follow this, but I'm inclined to let it go as well, for similar reasons. I'd really rather not touch the actual sheets at this point because they're — a bit delicate.

- Would it be possible to rotate these pages to horizontal? This would make reading easier for those who use the booklet with a reader and wouldn't change anything for those who print it out.

You're talking about the ones in the booklet, right? Yes — I've done that now, but it may cause printing weirdness since the page orientation changes several times in the middle of the document. Do you think that's advisable? I can change it back easily enough.

I will submit v1.1 today, but it may take a few days for it to show up on DriveThruRPG. Anyone who purchased the book should receive an email if he has his notifications set up to receive email from Nocturnal.

Thanks again,

T.

Hi Taliesin, thanks for the "inimitable", but being the last to review the text gives me an unfair "advantage". Errors have a way to creep up, and, had I proofread the text at an earlier stage, someone else would have spotted the errors left by me! ;-)

I wholeheartedly agree with all of your comments, just let these "graphical" minutiae stay, at least until the next major version (if and when)!

Regarding this last comment, yes, I was talking about the ones in the booklet. I rotated them using Preview for Mac and the print preview I obtained was OK (basically all pages were printed with the same orientation, as they should), so I'm inclined to think that this rotation will not cause any major havoc (at least on a Mac OS system). I'll try to print the booklet out when I download version 1.1 and will let you know how does it turn out.

Thanks again for the outstanding work,

Roberto

EDIT: I tried the print preview of my file with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC for Mac and everything seems OK, as long as you keep the "Automatic vertical/horizontal" option checked in the "Orientation" section (it is checked by default). Will do the same with the new version.

As promised, I printed the new version of the booklet from Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on Mac and everything's fine. The rotated pages print vertically as they should, but are shown horizontally on the screen when visualizing the file.
