I can't find anything on what a simple version of some of the games would actually cost. Certainly the discerning, Roman vassal might have a tabula set valued in £ but what about one he wants to take with him on campaign?

However much he wishes to pay for it: you can play it with pebbles on a board scratched on the dirt if you want to.
With 30 pieces and the board, something like 60d (£0.25) would already be a quite ornate set, IMHO. Even a 12d set would likely be quite acceptable for use by knights.

The boards can be made of anything from the "pebbles on a dirt board" to precious stones on a marble board.
Archeologists have found ivory chess or "tafl" pieces (tafl being a group of games played by the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings), which would cost more.
Let your player's decide how much they would want to spend. A 30d set would be a nicely carved wooden one. If the PC wants to spend more, then conspicuous consumption would also come into play.

I'd treat it as Treasure, actually. Not like they are used and then gone. Unless it is a gift to someone. :)

Ah, I was thinking of it as being something pretty that is shown off even as it is used.

I don't think I'll be bringing a set worth 1£+ on patrol/campaign. He has one of those back home but with CR 15£ he's not risking it. Up to 10 shillings he's ok with though.
Thanks.
