View Full Version : Logres - what does it include?

I'm creating a layered version of the Pendragon Player's Map highlighting the different lands so my player's can better understand the different territories. It's WIP at the moment but you can see it here;

http://andygw.smugmug.com/gallery/8420108_J57ns#617740854_KxRwS-X3-LB

I'm using the B&W map from KAP5, p13 as my guide and it's prompted some thoughts... Is Cornwall part of Logres, or is it separate? Likewise, Silchester, Lindsey, Nohaut & Caercolun are noted on the B&W map - and have a dotted line around them - but what does that signify? It can't mean they are counties because then Salisbury etc would also be noted. Are they separate kingdoms? Are *they* part of Logres?

There is a kingdom of Cornwall, which is separate from the Duchy of Cornwall; unfortunately, the map on KAP p.13 doesn't differentiate between the two. If you have the GPC, you can reference the maps on pp. 26 & 31.

The Duchy of Cornwall is part of Logres. Silchester, Lindsey and Caercolun are also duchies within Logres. Nohaut is a kingdom outside Logres.

Yes I do have the GPC; just referenced those maps and it's much clearer. Many thanks!

Now my understanding of a Duchy is not what is should be [scurries off to wikipedia...]

Hi Sir Pram,

Is this still up just tried to view it and had no luck.

Along the same lines does anyone have a map showing the different factions in the anarchy period?

When I start that section I want to colour code Britain, so they can see where all the factions are and change it each year as new boundries are drawn.

Cheers,

Hi Steve

It is, but the website seems to be down completely. I just tried loading the home page to no avail.

I finished the map using the maps in the GPC as my guide and making a best guess when they contradicted each other, the results of which I'll re-post soon. Next up, I'm going to do the same thing for the counties, doing factions also seems like a good idea.

cheers
Andy

Just tried your page - it says they're doing scheduled maintenance.
Managed a quick peek last night - a nice map! Very useful I'd say.

Seems to be working now :)

Here's the new link -

http://andygw.smugmug.com/gallery/8420108_J57ns#617740854_KxRwS-X3-LB

This is pretty much finished. The colour scheme is very simple; Green for Logres, Yellow for "foreign lands" eg Cumbria, Cambria and Cornwall, and Red for Saxon lands. I kept it simple so that I can show it to my players and they will instantly understand.

I'm currently working on a county and Duchy map.

Merlin - Would there be any place on this site to upload user created content, for other GMs to use? These images will sit on my website forever - no problem there - but once the forum post with the link drops down the list no one will find it.

Thanks.

I've done several maps now. I love them too! I absolutely love the full colour Player's map. I've printed it out on a plotter, attached it to mountboard, covered it with clear vinyl and now use it as my gaming "mat". The player's loved it, and because it's covered I can write on it with wipe off felt pens to indicate changes throughout the campaign. I'll try post a picture sometime.

Now, what Id really love to do, is to create the upper half of that map (from Hadrian's Wall upwards) in exactly the same style and to the same scale. However, that's a *lot* of work and it would push my Photoshop skills to the limit!

I think that Deira is also a Saxon Kingdom in the beginning of the KAPC.... its lords is King Eosa, half-brother of King Octa of Nahaut....

It should be so great.....

You're right, but I don't think that occurs until AD487. I'm currently in AD485 (yes, the start!) so this map does not reflect that yet.

Not so sure, cause in AD487, they are yet there.... and, according to the GS list of leaders and land (http://www.gspendragon.com/leaders.html), Deira is ruled by King Eosa until 495... but, it should be wrong....

So, I understand that you planned to do a map for every year that the boundaries will change ????

Yep, that's the plan. It's easy to change once created. Photoshop & Layers can do wonderful things :D

So, if you could go to the year 497... I'll be very pleased to use them in my own web-site... with your agreement, of course....

This is a AD487 with the outline of the area I *think* makes up Deira. I have no hard data to draw from other than the large scale map in GPC from which this deviates a little. I always try and put the borders along natural borders such as forests and rivers and since the forest in that area is called The Forest of Deira I thought that should be included.

If anyone has more accurate info then I'll update (eg should Pocklington be part of Deira or not)... also Ive titled this map Pendragon Kingdoms although I guess Lands would be more appropriate.. easy to change.

Rivers do often seem to be boundaries, but forests are often the boundary too, not their edge, some vague line in the middle.

I do not think Pocklington should be so.

So, according to the map of Cumbria (and the description around) p127 of the KAPC, we can say that :
Pocklington is a city of Brigantia, not Deira
there is a common boundary between Nahaut et Deira : the Yorkshire Moor...
Deira seems just to be the land where there is the forest of the same name... where the Saxons have easiness to establish their camps.
the city of Wandesboro, though south of the Hadrian's Wall, belongs to Garloth, not Nohaut...

So, the Saxon's kingdom of Deira and Nohaut are essentially composed of forests, that have the same name, and does not included any cities pointed in the map...

Hi Pram,

If I am not taking the michael, if you do a county one, can I borrow.cough..cough, your photoshop file, just saves me repeating your already good work?

Cheers,

Murt - Thanks for the research - I'm rubbish tracking down the exact piece of info I need in the GPC. Remember though, my map is for AD485, and this refers to AD510. I would imagine Deira would have swelled somewhat by then. I'll post what I have and if you'd like something else added I'll just drop it in.

Steve - No problem. The only issue is I've not started it yet :) However, it's all yours once I'm done. The .psd files are pretty big though (>10mb) so I may have to post it to a file sharer or something.

Sir Pramalot it is evident to me, even if I failed to see your maps, that you have done a great job!

Is there any chance I could see your maps somewhere?

Thank you a lot in any case.

Thank you.

As Merlin has now created a new board for Play Aids, I've put the link there.
