View Full Version : Tributes to the Angles

Once my Saxon PCs have trashed Caercolun and then sacked a couple of cities further west, the Angle king Cwichelm will demand tribute from the surrounding Briton lands.
I assume that the Britons routinely paid tribute to the Saxons. Would anyone have held out to the Angles? And what form did the tribute come in?

What does "held out" mean here?
And what form did the tribute come in?
Cattle, sheep, wagon loads of grain, cloth, tools, slaves, lumber and, once in a while, gold, silver or coin.

Refusing the demand for tribute. (According to GPC, the Angles send for tribute from all their Briton neighbours after they capture Hertford and Huntington.)
I'm inclined to have all the neighbouring lands send tribute, stopping the Angles in their tracks, to everyone's satisfaction except the Iceni. Lindsey may not as they are some way away, and Brun and Tribuit can't be found.

Cool. What is the player characters' role in all this? Are you planning any tribute relaterd scenarios or events? Dealing with a reluctant British lord refusing to pay up, or trying to stall payments, sounds like it has a lot of potential interaction for player characters.

It's only Lonazep between Huntingdon and Lindsey so I doubt distance would be a major issue. Possibly the King of Sorestan might have something to say if the Anglish try and muscle in on his protection racket however.
Alternatively, maybe Lindsey is actually too tough a nut to crack now that a significant chunk of the Anglish are busy setting up steadings in their newly conquered lands...

Yep. It's going to be the PCs job to take the demands for tributes to the neighbouring British lords. There's something rather cheesy about that, but it should be not only a way to fill a year with adventures, but also a way to introduce the lands of the south east to the PCs. They are learning the geography of Anglia/Caercolun by conquering it and now they are going to learn about the wider world by exploring it. I am also thinking of sending them to the Saxon lands to bear the news that Cwichelm of Anglia is declaring himself Bretwalda.
I am thinking of having each visit to the courts of the British lords be a little scenario with a small challenge to overcome. I haven't thought up those challenges yet (so if anyone has any ideas please please tell me). I also want each of the courts to come across as slightly off kilter, making each one distinctive. For example, I am thinking of having the London court be faux Roman. For another the lord might be a young boy. (I am going for a slightly larger than life feel for the campaign.)
