Dear all esteemed knights... This is a passage of play from my campaign which I'd like to share as it's opened some interesting plot points. First some background. It's AD484, my players have just become knights, been on an adventure, attended court and retired to their manors. During court, one of my players successfully wooed Lady Elaine enough to set up a visit at his manor later in the year. She is a pagan as is he, and she came to celebrate Halloween. I have expanded her character from the tidbit in KAP5 thus; "Lady Elaine Elaine, 24, is a beautiful woman whose first husband was killed by her base-born lover a few years ago, and who was subsequently hanged for killing a knight. She is rich, but considered an unfaithful hussy by every other woman in the county. Rumours persist that there was more to the deaths of her husband and lover than mere ill fortune. They say she has the Sight. Elaine has strong pagan beliefs which lends some weight to the gossip regarding her voracious sexual appetite that, some say, includes both men and women. Her behaviour scandalizes the more conservative members of court but none dare speak against her because of her status, wealth, and supposed supernatural powers."
She visited the PC knight with her retinue and he went to great lengths (within his meager budget) to woo her. He laid on a feast, hired singers, had pagan decorations etc,. When she arrived her gave her a tour of the grounds, tried to impress her with his looks and knowledge, and then at the feast was successful on Orate, Courtesy, Intrigue etc, . In the end, on the following day, he near critical flirted and I forced a chaste roll from her, she failed and succeeded at Lustful while he did the same. Then they jumped on each other and did it there and then, on the ground in true pagan style. Now I know this is very early. I did not follow the usual woo mechanic as outlined at the end of KAP5 but I feel I had good reason. This women has a terrible reputation, she is a pagan, a pagan hussey in fact, and she lost control in that moment. The PC knight, being young, just went for it. She doesn't love him - although she thinks more of him now - and he certainly doesn't love her. He's doing it to try and marry into wealth. Next year she could get pregnant by him. This is going to be tricky for her at court, and will obviously worsen her rep. I don't mind that, as it fills her character in the way I want it to, but it does raise some questions for me. Would she just leave court, have the child on the quiet and then return? I think she might as she still has political goals of her own. He might become aware of the child, if he did would that pose a problem for him (other than potential financial burden)? Any thoughts on how I might progress this?
Just a note on the actual gameplay; it was a blast. The traits and passion mechanic worked so wonderfully well and threw up some real gems. I did it entirely online via a dice server and IM with no problem. Our group meets for normal gameplay, but this inbetween stuff is done online. Here's some snippets; This was during the feast, the PC had used his hospitality to inspire (successfully) his Intrigue, he used this to glean some more info from Elaine re matters at court. "Lady Elaine turns her conversation to more personal matters at court. "Oh you must've seen how doe eyed Sir Jaradan gets when he's around the sweet little Gwiona. He's handsome of course, but a little young, even for me! ahahaha" - of course, you realise that Sir Jaradan and yourself are the same age! This may ruffle your feathers somewhat. And with a Proud of 16 you have no choice.. your character wont stand for any slurs lady or not.. Rolls Modest = Fails, Rolls Pride = Succeeds, snaps and retorts "Perhaps you're just a little too old". She doesn't like it, I roll her Forgiving = Success. She doesn't leave the feast, and he succeeds brilliantly in a Courtesy, does another Intrigue successfully to gauge her mood and keeps the feast going, to her liking."
Then, after the feast; The following morning, you attempt to rise early. Energetic roll required here. With -5 on the Trait - you kept the feast going a long time, it's early and you have a headache. PC rolls = Fail, a FUMBLE! ok you sleep right through until SHE comes to wake YOU up! He apologies and they go for a walk alone in the woods. They talk for some time and when the PC senses the right moment he goes for a Flirt roll. I add up all bonuses for the good things he did during the feast and take away for the bad (-6 for the insult and Fumble morning roll). He then goes for Inspiration on Flirting using his Hospitality and succeeds, giving a modified +5 all told. Rolls Flirt = High Success. She rolls Chaste = Fail, Lustful = Success, he does the same, she is overcome and he goes for it!
Bring on AD485!
