BoB’s page 21 says that ambushing foes is unchivalrous. Would it be unchivalrous to ambush invading Saxons?
Boosting one’s scouting force and engaging on favorable homeland terrain would give a commander -10 battle intensity. Where to get these scouts? Well, finding the enemy would be a great way for a team of PC squires, esquires, etc. to win their spurs (for the surviving ones at least) ....
Great book by the way!

Thank you.
The rules of war contain some unwritten parts, which I am going to acknowledge here.
War is between Us and Them.
The less like Us they are, the less we have to accord any decency to them for one simple reason: they are not Us.
Now, all knights are part of US: we are knights first (or maybe second).
It's unchivalrous to ambush other knights, or to kill them instead of ransoming them, and so on.
Knights striving to live a chivalrous life must decide where upon the scale of Not-Us someone becomes Them, and thus no longers deserves the priviliges of chivalry. A French knight, of course, even a German and Italian! A Greek one... hm, is he a knight?
Are Saxons on this scale?
Well, during the early periods, no. They are way, way down on the Them part, for they kills us, destroy our homes, and enslave our children.
Are they not honorable warriors, with their own code of ethics about fighting fairly and so on? Yes, indeed, they are and with rites that are astonishingly similar to knights! But it's not our code, so do not trust them, and use any method to overcome that devil span, whether it is ambush, lies, false oaths or throwing sand in their eyes.
So say the traditionalists.
Maybe we can hear from some other perspective too.

That makes perfect sense to me. Thanks!

Since there seems to be no CLEAR answer I think that a trait roll is necesary. obviously if ur not chivalrous u dont care, but if u are the u should have to make an honor roll. if u make the roll then u uphold ur chivilric virtues. If u fail then u can ambush, but at the cost of 1 honor? alternatively u could choose a chivilric trait to use instead? Its an option! :)
