I am curious has anyone stripped down the the Pendragon system for Dark Ages / Age of Tyrants Campaign 400-600AD in Britain-Hibernia-Amorica. Or Have they tried to run a style of campaign like Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Trilogy?

My current campaign is with a group that usually does historical wargaming and after the Boy King and GPC we decided to try out a less fantastical and more historical setting. I've created a timeline of events inspired roughly by some of the historical fiction from the same era, but it mostly uses wide reaching regional random events tables from such varied sources as Pigs and Glory to HarnMaster alongside what little historical details are available to set the wider stage. To be honest, very little work has been required in the rules department to give the game a more gritty tone as the high lethality of combat and the lack of the later armours keeps the players on their toes already. A little bit of fiddling has been required for the courtly and romantic aspects, but the Saxon and Land of Giants supplements as well as PendragonPass already address several issues regarding non "Knightly" campaigns. We have found the campaign fun and a refreshing new take on Pendragon. Although it does require a little bit more work, me and my group are all natural born tinkerers so it would feel strange if we weren't mucking around with the system. No doubt some people think playing Pendragon this way defeats the point, but the ruleset is so unique and potent its hard not to want to use it for everything.

As a side note, other than Pendragon, our longest running games are from WFRP and CoC, where characters tend to die horribly or go insane and then die horribly, so Pendragon has always been our more light hearted adventures.

I am a BRP fan (Greg's contributions to RQ & Stormbringer where my childhood dreams coming to fruition in the 80s) and I am interested in the historical backdrop with the subtle magic hinted at by cornwell's books. I think the knights and nobility aspects of the game could be drawn from the sub roman influences. Equestrian order become the "Knights": Teulu / Companions. I would become more engrossed with the Warlords and war-bands aspect. Druids, Pagan Magicians, Bards etc.... with the fantastical beasts ( great boars, Dire wolves, Dragons etc.. and quests "13 great treasures of Britain" etc.. .....

Also I would set my campaign in the north "Hen Olegdd" the kingdoms of Rheged, Ystradclud, Gododdin, Elmet etc...

"Picts, Scots and Angles oh my ..... okay who parked the unicorn he made mess in stall seven"
