View Full Version : Help! I need some ideas for what could have happened in a Pagan Sacred Grove

Another of my PK's was knighted last night. As he was a Pagan, I decided for a change he would do a vigil / spend the night in a sacred grove. However, he fumbled his Energetic, and I ruled he overslept and was late for the starting knighthood ceremony.

However, not wishing to waste an opportunity, I think something happened to make the PS(quire) to fall asleep.

So what could have happened? Any ideas?

I am hoping to do a flashback and play this on as a solo next week.

Cheers

Faire folk enchanted him and as he slept laid a doom or quest on him

Yes. I was thinking of something like that. Possibly even a 'heroquest' where he is lost in the land of faerrie until he acomplishes something.

I could probably come up with a quest. However, what do you mean by Doom exactly. An omen of his death or something else?

yes ..... remember when Merlin visits Arthur in the land of dreams at the end of John Boorman's Excalibur ..... that could be your template.

The fae often cast a sleep upon everyone, then steal something.

Perhaps they stole something from him, which would be embarassing, or reveal a weakness, and which he will need to keep secret. Except that it affects something hard to reveal. Or it is a family artifact stolen. (It will show up when they go to faerie o course)

Oh, or he was given a choice: he could take
1. a magical blessing once (a reroll of dice), at the cost of... his firstborn? a night with his wife? A sacrifice every year, forrever, even after thee blessing is used...
2. Magical ten points of armor, but all his children will be taken to faerie
3. A curse. Oh, -10 to Sword maybe.

Or maybe he has been replaced by a fetch

And the real knight has been stolen away to the Fairy realm.

Would be a nice surprise when a mysterious knight turns up in 1-5 years and challenges him to a fight to the death:-

Player wins "As you remove the helm of the slain foe you are stunned to see a mirror image looking back at you".

Player loses GM hands him new character sheet with maybe a few cool bits of fairy gear "After so long revenge is your and this evil doppelganger has be slain".

Loss of a child to the land of Faeire sounds good.... pagan sacrifice even better ( something like an artifact of christian power or devotion, I am not big on human sacrifice saw Mel Gibson's Apocalypto to many times )

Thanks Greg. A lot to think about there.

I like the idea of a dark gift, with a price. I just need to phrase it so it is very tempting, and yet with an ambigous 'cost'.

I don't want to be too 'evil' with this player, who just popped his Pendragon cherry last night. Something, interesting for the story, but not crippling, but he'll pay for that fumble one way or another.

A roll on the aging table is always a good price to pay.

Who knows, maybe some faerie damosel took a liking to the young knight and gave him a better sword, shield or some such?

Thanks everyone.

BigSteveUK. I like the idea of the doppelganger. However, at this stage he was only a squire and unmarried. I'll keep it in mind should we have a similar situation again.

Bleddyn. Loss of his first born to fairy seems harsh, but in keeping with the setting. This could open up a quest to get his baby back which could be very interesting. Hmmm I need to read some Faerie tales....

Atgxtg: I'd rather not make him roll on the aging table just yet, although I agree it would be a good all round repercussion from a 'fae' event.

I am tempted to make him have a female fae take a liking to him and bear him a 'child'. However, she will be a jealous one.

Does anyone know of any good resources on faerie folk in the published material? There is some stuff on ebay UK now for previous editions so would be a good time to buy.

Cheers

PS apologies for the late reply. I'm on a Blackberry and didn't realise I had so many responses.

Just found what I was looking for. The tale of Sir Launfal. Perfect.

Except in this case, there will also be a baby taking advantage of the KaL.

This is brilliant!

In a pinch, it might even be a great way to resurrect a character who's died without an heir. A half-fae child could just show up on the door of now dead PC's manor and be conveniently just the right age for knighting. Alternatively, you could have the other PCs return to Camelot/Sarrum/somewhere convenient, and as the funeral is getting underway, who should walk in but the 'real' PC who was in faerie this whole while, unbeknownst to everyone, including the actual player.
