View Full Version : What would be the "terms" for the Pentacostal Tournament?

We're getting into the Tournament period of the GPC and I intend to start running the players through some tournament circuits.
I do want to put some emphasis on the potential economic rewards/perils of tournaments. The GPC mentions four possible terms:
For Love
For Gear
For Gear and Steed
For Ransom
However, there isn't really any mention of which is the most common. For most of the neighborhood and local tournaments I figure that I'll probably pick a term at random, but since the big Pentacost tournament is sort of the start of the circuit (and one the PCs aren't likely to win) I was wondering what others might deem as appropriate.

It epends onthe time period too. I believe that the gear and ransoms were later in the timeline and the FOR LOVE was before the tourney period? :)

Catching up on reading things, and there in an abstract tournament glory rewards system in the start of The Great Pendragon Campaign. Therein in mentions that Arthur sponsored tournaments - i.e. pentecost - are always for love with no wagers. Note that in KAP tournaments start out "for love", and then progress to the others as a means of keeping out the riff raff.

Also note that there is mention of "food tournaments" coming in later, where the wager is food. Also you will need to decide if/when real as opposed to rebated weapons were used. I'd always been wary of real weapons in the Grande Melee but have now found a reference to it being a German thing historically which I will now do some further research on.

Also - and I haven't got this far yet - note that wagers for ransom or gear etc, are very likely to end up bankrupting your players as they will struggle to afford replacements. I do think that this will lead to the idea of "tournament teams" - as practiced in real life by William Marshall, and that wins/losses will be conducted on a team basis - which means in essence that the new knights at the bottom of the pile, fund the enjoyment for most other people. On this basis I would also think that lots of local tournaments will stay at the "for love" level, since for many people this will be a major social event in their lives (and they will have the crippling expenses on the dresses for their wives and daughters....).
