Hi all,

First post on the forum after a few days of lurking.

I've just started the GPC, (or am about to, really) with a single player, a female knight. She, and her fellow (NPC) squires are just returning from Imber, where she personally slew the bear with a critical hit at just the right moment, probably saving the life of one of her fellows. On the way back, they run into Madoc, who is heading to Salisbury to gather support for raising an army against the Saxons. Naturally, they offer to escort the Prince to see the Earl. Anyway, the PK gets talking with Madoc and starts taking a liking to him. She flirted with him (which went entirely over his head), however, I have a feeling that it is going to come up; she's Pagan after all.

So, is Madoc married? I couldn't find anything about it in the GPC; however, given his status, I would find it very unlikely that he has remained unwed. He may be a bastard, but he's still Uther's son, and to many- the heir apparent as well. So, any thoughts on who Madoc could be married to, and does he have any children at all?

Thanks,
-RI.

Depends upon if you want to flirt with Canon. In some texts, Arthur does indeed have a nephew from Madoc. The name is Eliwlod. Check it out by google/search engines to find references. Be warned, you will have a balancing act on your hands because if the nephew is known and legitimate, then he is officially the heir. In my campaign, it came to a head about the time Uther first saw Igraine which stopped the impending marriage as well as making Madoc officially heir. It didn't stop my female knight and Madoc from secretly marrying before offspring came about, but the knowledge of this is still secret. Part of the intrigue and tension is the need to keep this secret, else the nephew becomes the pawn in a very large political game.

Have fun.

GPC doesnt specifically state that he is , so I always assumed he was single. He gets invested and recognized later so I always made him get married shortly after.

Eliwlod pops up in the GPC, he's in the Forest Sauvage living as a bird and I think the PCs can meet him.

In fact, the ONLY time that Madoc shows up in the literature is as a name, the father of Eliwlod
And the only time Eliwlod shows up in in the prophesy that I turned into that encounter with the Eagle

As I essentially said, you are venturing into non-canon storylines, but then that is your choice. I have done so and many others probably as well. Greg is correct.
Eliwlod: A Cymric Arthurian Hero: Leader of the Boar Hunt
Eliwlod is a Cymric (Welsh) hero known from a single poem inthe Welsh Triads where he is named as one of the knights of Arthur's court. He is a son of Uthr and Arthur's cousin and his magical ability is a silver tongue that none can not listen to. (http://www.celtnet.org.uk/gods_e/eliwlod.html)

There is a prophecy in some texts that tells Uther his sons and daughters will reign and Madoc is mentioned. Well, if Madoc dies sonless... And whence the daughter (Anna?).

So, have fun if you want.

Bob (I need to keep better track of my reading sources so I can recall them on demand)

In my campaign, the only non-knightly player character is a lady in waiting to the Countess of Salisbury (the player switches to playing a knight in non-courtly scenes). The first time Uther brought the royal court to Sarum, she initiated a beauty pageant, using these rules http://www.gspendragon.com/pageant.html. The player character won the pageant (excepting, I think, the fashion round, because the daughter of a vassal knight could hardly compete with a duchess in terms of libra spent on dresses), and I thought it would be fun to have her catch Madoc's eye in the process. From there, things have evolved to the point where a secret morganatic marriage may be conducted in a chapel in one of the player knight manors in the next session of play. Unfortunately, the GPC calls for Madoc's death in the session after that... such tragic drama!

Thanks for the thoughts and replies all. As it happened, nothing came to pass; the player knight ended up drinking with her fellow squires (indulgence checks, naturally), missed a possible liaison with Madoc- and he was gone the next morning. Knighted now, she's asked the Earl to find her a husband, so we'll see what happens- she's likely to run into Madoc again several times in the coming years. Still, I think the story potential behind a match/children with Madoc will be too good (for me) to pass up; changing the storyline to deal with it will make for interesting times indeed, I think.

Just on the matter of Roderick finding a match for her. We've arranged, for the purpose of playing a female knight in the setting, that the PK's family has a standing agreement/tradition in place in the County, that allows for a daughter (or other woman in the female line) to inherit in the place of a son and all income due to the female knight rather than the husband. (Basically the reverse of the usual inheritance laws.) However, I can't see many men (at least of her class) happily abiding by that, so marriage prospects may be a little slim, or require marrying down to a degree. My inclination was towards a second son with few other prospects available to him
