My players will be going into battle next session, and for the first time one if their own will be the unit commander. We're trying to figure out which of them should be the commander.

Knight A is a banneret by virtue of marriage (none of the PKs are vassals to him)
Knight B has the highest honor in the unit
Knight C has the highest battle skill

The players of course would like to choose the knight with the highest skill, but recognize that protocol may dictate otherwise. Which of these knights would traditionally take command of the unit?

Our group makes a game out of it by ruling he with the highest glory at the beginning of the year is the eschille commander. The storyline generally conforms pretty well. I'd definitely steer away from highest battle skill, which is a bit like metagaming.

The banneret has the highest social rank, so it should be him.

Where you have a group of social peers, then I would go with Glory rather than Honour as the discriminator - Honour is partly to do with public face and the like, but is also tied up with rightful conduct, whereas Glory is all about the deeds.

Of course the person tipped for the role can demur in favour of someone else (take a Modest check that man), but unless the replacement is obviously a better candidate for the role then questions may well be asked; remember that the Banneret's actions reflect upon his Lord and also the members of his retinue.

Oops, I meant to say glory, not honor. I assumed that the higher social rank would take precedence, but I wasn't sure.

Since the bannerette has his own knights, he should be leading them in battle rather than riding with his buddies (the other PKs).

Do the other PKs want to ride under his banner or form a seperate unit?

To clarify:

Knight B and Knight C are one and he same.

Highest rank (not glory, honor or battle skill) is the commander. He may be 21 years old, have 11 i Battle and leading a unit of veterans, but if he hold a higher rank (banneret vs vassal knights), he commands, end of discussion. This is a strictly hierarchal society and these things matters (cf the recent discussion of player wifes and stewardship; Great, you have a skilled steward and your 16-year wife has Stewardship 6, but she will run you manner, it is her prerogative and duty. Skill do not enter into the discussion).
