View Full Version : Possible houserule for calculating damage value

So, this is literally just something I came up with off top my head, and I have in no way thought through all the ramifications, or even if I'd WANT to use this, but I was trying to think of some more uses for Dex, and something occurred to me. A lot of the possible house rules for Dex usually involve adding it in Size's place in the damage formula, or in the Knockdown formula, etc. Well, I don't like that, partially because in my own, admittedly very limited experience with fighting while being incredibly large (I'm 6'4" and like, 350 lbs. Admittedly mostly from fat; I'm a high Size, low Strength character), there is undeniably an advantage from being large. I'm hard to knock down, and have advantages o fthings like reach, leverage, etc. That being said, I can understand the argument of Dex being useful in a battle by striking more quickly, etc. Well, instead of taking Size OUT of the damage equation, why not just ADD Dex to it? Instead of (Size+Str)/6, who not (Size+Str+Dex)/9? Mathematically, it seems to amount to eh same things. Admittedly, I feel like this will keep more knights in the 5d6 damage range, though I may be wrong. Has someone ever tried something like this? Or ran the probabilities to see if this is actually viable? I'm honestly more curious than anything, like I said, there a good chance I wouldn't use this anyway.

As you said, the more stats you add in, the more averaged result you get.

Also, housecats of DOOOOOM: High DEX little critters will do tons of damage with these new rules.

Also, nerfed Giants: Low DEX big critters will have much reduced damage, closer to two-thirds in the case of big giants (almost non-existent DEX compared to SIZ and STR). (Not that I am that bothered by lowering the Giant damage, which tends to make a paste of knights on a single hit.)

Finally, there is no particular reason for DEX to add to damage. In KAP, DEX is NOT how accurate you are with a weapon. That is your Weapon skill.

So yeah, I am not a fan of this houserule, either. :)

(I prefer to deal with SIZ being the best stat by simply charging double for it in chargen if using the point distribution system: Just start everything at 12, and allow moving points between attributes, but SIZ costs double. So you can drop APP and DEX both to 10 and then get SIZ 14, instead to 16.)

Raw DEX figures into combat by being what you use to brawl and grapple. I rule that you can use this with any weapon at the cost of 1d6 damage and not being able to use a shield. For a proper weapon this means both hands on it and doing dagger damage. For a small weapon like a dagger or hatchet its DMG-2d6.

Given that the brawl and grapple rule is raw it never made much sense to me to use your paltry dagger skill when most knights never raise it past 5 and have a DEX of at least 8. Skill is always better than DMG in Pendragon.
